Minecraft XBLA was Profitable within an Hour, and Broke Digital Sale Records

Minecraft is digging its own grave with its latest release on XBLA - and by "grave" we mean "lavish, gold-plated throne room with indoor pool and grape-feeding robots." Minecraft servers Today's tweet from Markus "Notch", Markus Persson, a Minecraft developer, revealed that Minecraft was profitable within one hour of its launch through XBLA. That's on top of Notch's multi-million-dollar version for PC.



Notch reported that Minecraft sold more than 400,000 copies in 24 hours, based on leaderboard participation numbers. Minecraft set records for digital sales for the console, selling more copies than any other XBLA game in its first day, according to Microsoft.



Notch tweeted earlier this morning that he had Minecraft sales figures (turns out that they were the same leaderboard figures). This led to a discussion about the inner workings of XBLA developer contracts and Fez's Polytron. Polytron isn't yet aware of Fez's exact numbers despite the fact that the report was released just last month.



According to Polytron, "Standard procedure" means that you find out the amount you sold when your first check is issued three-four months after the date you received your first check. Notch believed that getting instant numbers was the norm, but he avoided negotiations over contracts and doesn't know what it says about the subject.



Polytron wrote that Minecraft also gets free updates. "This is something that every other developer on this platform is told is simply impossible." Notch replied: "We had fought for this, but we only got a small number of them. It's not clear why they don't like it."



We might have discovered the secret talent of Notch and the secret to his success: fighting in the contract, not negotiating, and winning.

Microsoft today announced Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, Mojang's console version of the hugely popular PC game, which has broken all previous records for digital sales. It was the most popular game sold by any other game within the first 24 hours on Xbox LIVE Arcade.



This is following the footsteps of Trials Evolution, who also broke records for revenue in its first day of sales for the first game in the "Arcade Next" program.



Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was created by 4J Studios in conjunction with Mojang and Microsoft Studios, and introduces new gaming experiences like crafting menus that are unique, game tutorials, and split-screen multiplayer. It also offers online multiplayer for up to eight players on Xbox LIVE.



Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition is available for purchase on Xbox LIVE Arcade at 1600 Microsoft Points. It is the final game of the "Microsoft Studios Presents Arcade NEXT” lineup that also includes Trials Evolution (Redlynx), Bloodforge(Climax), and Fable Heroes, (Lionhead).
