Minecraft game includes Ordnance Survey GB terrain data By Matthew Wall Technology reporter, BBC News
23 September 2013
Minecraft, the highly popular game of building and monsters has now been able to incorporate accurate Ordnance Survey terrain data of Great Britain in its blockwork virtual world.
The game's 33 million players can build worlds atop of geographically precise landscapes covering 224,000 sq km (86,000 sq miles) of Britain.
Joseph Braybrook, an intern with OS's Innovation Labs, created the GB Minecraft world in just two weeks.
It uses free OS OpenData products.

Graham Dunlop, OS Innovation Lab Manager, said that "we think we may have created the biggest Minecraft world ever" based on real-world data.
"The map that resulted shows the huge potential, not just for using Minecraft for computing and geo-technical purposes in schools, but the wide range of applications available for OS OpenData too."
Minecraft was developed in 2009 by Swede Markus "Notch" The game is a virtual world comprised of cubes made from different materials like sand, rock and lavas.
Players can work together to build shelters, construct items from raw materials and fight off various monsters.
More than 22 billion Minecraft blocks are contained in the OS GB world.
After downloading the map into Minecraft and then logged in, they can enter the 3D virtual world via OS's head office in Southampton and can recreate real-life features such as Stonehenge or imagined buildings like Hogwarts castle.
The OS map products - OS Terrain 50 and OS VectorMap are combined to create an 3D model of the earth surface overlaid with features like roads, woodlands, and water.
Players can build their own structures on top of realistic terrain.
As OS is the UK's primary national mapping authority, its information encompasses the mainland and the surrounding islands but it does not include Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man or Channel Islands.
