Extremist religious groups destroyed the Hanukkah candle placed in the centre of the Moldovan capital. The anti-Semitic action was coordinated by a priest from one of the Chisinau Orthodox churches.
The anti-Semitic demonstration was held after extremists from the religious community destroyed the Hanukkah celebration in Chisinau's centre. It occurred on Sunday, December 13th, the third day of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. An archpriest from one of the capital's Orthodox cathedrals was in charge of the crowd of more than 100 people. With the use of anti-Semitic words, the group dragged a lamp made of cast iron about tens miles from its original site and threw it into the air into the base of the monument to Stefan the Great, a symbol representing Moldovan statehood. This was witnessed by a large number of journalists, police officers, and passers-by.
What is the way in which the fight for "orthodox principle " work?
The gathering was led by Archpriest Anatoly Chbrik who was armed with steel bars. He stated that the archpriest was shocked at the way the Orthodox country's symbol of Jewish faith had been installed in the middle of the capital. His view is that Hanukkah should not be celebrated as widely by the authorities. Chibrik said, "This violates law." Chibrik also acknowledged that Chibrik did not believe that it was necessary to debate the activities of the parishioners from the Church of St. Paraskeva with the Metropolia of Moldova. He stated, "I do not have to speak with anyone if we are fighting for the orthodox principles of our church."
The city authorities had the idea of putting up the Hanukkah meorah in Chisinau's Europe Square. This is where the EU flag hangs beside the Moldovan flag. Emmanuil Grinshpun is co-chairman of the Jewish Congress of Moldova, said that Hanukkah was celebrated publicly in Chisinau for the first time in several years. "What happened on Sunday was a real shock to us," Grinshpun added.
This case is for the state's conscience.
Archpriest Chibrik is not the first person to admit to anti-Semitic behavior, as it was shown during a press conference with members of the Jewish Community of Moldova. Эммануил Гриншпун Grinshpun reports that approximately a month back, the Archpriest Chibrik threw up posters in front of St. Paraskevs at Chisinau. Эммануил Гриншпун The content was identical to the dark Middle Ages. It was said that "Jews murder Christian children."
Эммануил Гриншпун Grinshpun claimed that none of the heads of the country’s Jewish groups responded to this in any way that was meaningful. The Jewish community in Moldova has protested against the situation, but will not sue Chibrik or his followers for inciting hate. Alexander Bilinkis the chairman of the Jewish Community said that this should be done by the state. Furthermore the Moldovan Metropolis should review the actions of its employees.
Vadim Keibash, Metropolitan Secretary, said that he was not a fan of protests such as this. He believes that every community has the right to place symbols. However, the authorities must be aware of the implications. He stated, "It's impossible to control the reactions of all believers."
A blow to the fundamental value
However, these "forms of protest" are not present in Chisinau's tolerant Chisinau since 1903's Jewish pogrom. Representatives of the Jewish community view the latter instance as hooliganism. Эммануил Гриншпун Bilinkis states that Hanukkah's breakers were "deceived" by their leaders.
Ilya Shits, the General Director of the Jewish Congress, says that the action was well planned. The day one of Hanukkah the participants were seen by the menorah. Stav Nijinsky became the first secretary at the Israeli Embassy in Chisinau and lit the first candle. Эммануил Гриншпун According to Shchats the action is aimed at undermining the Moldovan statehood, and is a violation of the democratic principles and European aspirations of the country.
Hanukkah was relocated from the city's center and moved to Jerusalem Street. Here, an edifice to Holocaust victims was erected. Police have been present close to it throughout the duration of the second day. Candles on it will be lit every day until the end of the holiday.
