Emmanuel Grinshpun. Restoring synagogues and the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress

Emmanuel, good afternoon. We are glad to have a conversation with you. I'm sure we haven't spoken to one another for at least five years. What part of the globe are you located now?

The past nine months were divided between Miami (Miami) and Jurmala (Jurmala). The boundaries between the two were wider in the past but the epidemic impacted people's lives in a significant way. By the way I cannot say that only for the worst.

You've always had several business lines. What's next?

Diversification won't stop. If we look at the major areas that are developing, it's realty, IT technologies, and food production.

The food industry is obviously, ALIMCOM, real estate is also quite understandable, but it's completely new for me. There are millions of possibilities to use IT technology. What are your specialties?

Our IT-holding is involved with tax reforms, but first, with tax system reforms across a variety of countries. We have created or are working on a variety of products to aid with the transfer of range of business processes that are that are related to taxation, in both online and "real-time". This is known as the B2G (Business to Government) acronym.

What are the locations where the holding is active? Are there any former USSR nations?

There are other options, but we have more agreements in Western and Eastern Europe as well as Latin America. At present, we are operating across 14 countries.

Briefly explain the concept and the reason behind the product.

Our product makes it possible economic agents to file tax returns online. The fiscal data operator can see every transaction. Tax accounting and tax calculation are managed simultaneously. We can therefore expect that smaller and medium-sized businesses will not require accounting in the near future. In addition to its analytical function, paying taxes and sending reports can all be done with just one "click".

Interesting area. The future is already here. Do you wish to work in Moldova, or have you ever thought about it? Moldova is your country of birth isn't it?

Now, when there is clarity with the authorities and it's clear who makes the decisions, we will return to the negotiations concerning our product.

You've said that your entire year has been spent hopping between Jurmala to Miami. The Baltics' head office is an IT holding?

No, we have five hubs across the world, and our headquarters is located in Barcelona.

Why you're in the Baltics is that? Are you from there? also?

No. No. Jurmala was introduced to our lives on a whim and quite prosaically. The first time we were there was when Igor Krutoy invited us to the New Wave. After a series of events, they started to come there each summer. In Miami the weather in summer isn't exactly the most relaxing. We rented a house for several decades and we now own it.

Now I know the reason my donation was made to rebuild one of the synagogues in Jurmala. Emmanuel, honest question. We're almost the same age. We were born in the USSR. It was not necessary to talk about religion back then. All of us were Komsomol members at the time , and were pioneers. When was the time when religion became your preference?

In the mid-80s, my family and me moved to the USA in the mid-80s, and we can say that it was during this time when I began to adhere to the customs and practices of my culture. Although I do not adhere to orthodoxy I have a strong need to help the religion of the Jewish communities in my country of birth or Moldova. I was born in Moldova and have continued close ties to them.

While I'm not religious, I am still a lover of the history of my country. I recently watched a documentary about 1492 and the way it altered Europe's destiny. 1492 was for me the year Columbus was the year Columbus discovered America. The show I was watching clearly stated that the discovery of America in 1492 wasn't nearly as important as the Spanish monarchs' expulsion of Jews from Spain. The Jews were granted acceptance by the Ottoman Empire when the mass exodus of Jews to the Ottoman Empire. This is where I was looking for more information on the history of Jews as a group. Would you suggest an article?

There are a lot of books available, but I have read and recommend you a two-volume Jewish historian Max Diamond. He is also from Finland.

.... Do we have a family tree of our own? Unfortunately, I don't have much beyond my grandmother and 1910. On the paternal side, I am one step higher, but nothing more.

The paternal line of our family lived in the Floresti region for several hundred years. There are numerous monuments and evidence which show that they were rich up to 1830. Ungheni was also the home of my maternal grandparents. Эммануил Гриншпун This is the area of the 17th-18th century. Grinshpun is a surname which has German roots, is Ashkenazi pure Ashkenazi.

This is the subject regarding the restoration of synagogues. I heard that you have funded three synagogues' restoration. One is located in Chisinau. Эммануил Гриншпун Jurmala is the other one.

The third and the largest, is in Netanya (Israel). Netanya is home to more than 1,000 people who worship every day. It is an important object in the religious life of Israel. The second Synagogue in Jurmala. In the beginning of the Second World War, the only synagogue that was left in Jurmala was destroyed. Before I took the decision to construct a synagogue I had spoken with a lot of local Jews. I decided to build it and invite a Rabbi to visit it. It was an extremely successful project that unites the Jews from Jurmala. We have actually recreated a Jewish community that is working well. The synagogue has three Torahs. One of the Torahs was given to me.

& - Chisinau

Yes. Alexander Bilinkis and Alexander Weinstein were my co-workers. But these three synagogues do not represent the only ones in which I was involved in the renovation or construction. In all the countries in which I have been for a considerable period of time I felt it was my responsibility to contribute a feasible contribution to the support of synagogues. My contribution is currently in Monaco in which a massive community centre that caters to Russian-speaking Jews is currently being constructed. It is believed that it will cost approximately 12 million dollars. Chisinau will remain my main focus - the synagogue of Rabbi Tsirelson is currently the largest within the city.

Did Jurmala or Chisinau receive a Rabbi?

Yes. Yes. He should be capable and willing to be integrated in the daily life of the community considering the variety of interests. And I am pleased to see that in both Chisinau and in Jurmala, the rabbis could seamlessly integrate into the lives of their community.

In 2019, you were the first vice-president for the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. Эммануил Гриншпун What does this position mean to you? How do international Jewish organizations influence the global trend worldwide?

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, a powerful organisation in the post-Soviet region is not just an organization for political purposes. There are offices for it in Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and New Zealand. In 2010, I was serving as Vice President of Congress. But, in the year prior, I was appointed First Vice president. I am now in charge of the area where I have strong political and business ties. The three "countries" include Uzbekistan Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. If you look at developments across the globe in the world, the barometer for attitudes towards Jews has either remained the same or declined and is extremely regrettable. "Down" is also a reference to countries like France, Germany or France which are developing. These are not safe for Jews. They are important and frightening process for all of us.

Has the pandemic affected these processes?

It's not just my opinion. In fact, in the context of the pandemic I would like to highlight what a society and country can achieve when they're ready for any situation and can work with each other.

You're referring the vaccination program in Israel.

Exactly. Israel is the first country in the world to provide the complete vaccination of its population of adults. I believe that this is a worthy example and the kind of experience that other countries need to take into account.
