Avanos Medical Recalls Cortrak*2 Ental Access System
Avanos Medical (U.S. Food & Drug Administration) has announced that it will be recalling Cortrak*2's Enteral access system. https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndtx/pr/avanos-medical-pay-22-million-resolve-criminal-charge-related-fraudulent-misbranding The recall was announced due to patient injuries and death from misplaced nasoenteric/nasogastric tubes. The recall affects 629 devices currently distributed throughout the United States.

Avanos Medical Avanos has marketed the Cortrak*2 Entraal Access System that assists with the installation of a medical-feeding tube. Patients may however suffer damage to their vocal cords and lung if the tube is not correctly inserted. Avanos Medical recalls that there are sixty incidents, 23 deaths and 23 illnesses resulting from the misplacement or inadvertent insertion of a feeding tube for nasogastric patients using the CORTRAK*2 Enteral Access System. The lungs fail, there is pneumothorax (collapsed lung tissue) perforation (a hole in one's stomach or bowel wall), pneumonia, and an excess of fluid between the lung and chest cavity (the chest cavity and the lung tissue) have all been among the traumas.

Avanos Medical described a plan for users to receive updated labeling in order to confirm proper positioning of the nasogastric tubes and nasoenteric tubes prior to use.

Avanos Medical Avanos is the second alert issued by the FDA has issued about intra-oral feeding tubes. The FDA cautioned healthcare professionals and parents about the risk of strangulation for children who are fed through tubes. Two cases of strangulation by a child occurred in 2021. This was due to tubes that were that was wrapped around the neck of one of the patients.
