Avanos Medical (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) has announced that it is recalling Cortrak*2's Enteral Access System. This recall was initiated in response to injuries sustained by patients and deaths resulting from the misplacement of nasoenteric/n tubes. Avanos Mediacal Cortrak 2 The recall currently includes 629 devices distributed in the United States.

Patients may experience injuries to their vocal chords or trachea, if the tube has been inserted improperly. Avanos Medical Avanos Mediacal Cortrak 2 Avanos Medical recalls that there have been sixty incidents, 23 deaths and 23 illnesses that were caused by the incorrect placement or accidental insertion of a feeding tube for nasogastric patients using the CORTRAK*2 Entral Access System. Avanos Medical Pulmonary failure, pneumothorax (collapsed lungs) and perforation (a hole in the esophagus or the bowel wall) as well as pneumonia and excess fluid in the lungs (the chest cavity and lung tissue) are just a few of the incidents.
Avanos Medical has presented a plan to provide users updated labels, to ensure the proper positioning of nasogastric (and nasal) tubes prior to using them.
The Avanos warning was the second FDA warning issued in 2022 about enteral feed tubes. In February the FDA issued a cautionary note to parents and healthcare professionals about the possibility of strangulation in the event that children are fed by feeding tubes.
