Unlikely events in which an ex-soldier meets a happily, but lonesome breadwinner at an open dance.

he was back. the area in which he had sworn to protect, with no one to meet his gaze. his name was smudged into dust. perhaps it was his punishment for exiting his duty. he soon realized the blind crowd was deep into dancing. rather than the heat of the sun, or shapes of the clouds, their gazes were reserved for one another only. he felt peace surge through his chest upon seeing the calm and pleased people. as he considered to leave, he couldn't help but notice stillness in midst of all the motion. he couldn't imagine anyone staying still, voluntarily. his day became more entertaining, as he decided to approach the other male in a standing position.

"missing a date?" the ex-soldier asked with a mischievous smile in motion. he couldn't deny the commoner's royal beauty. he stood as proof, that monarchy was driven by family name alone. if it were decided by beauty, he was sure the commoner would wear the king's crown.

"happily, at that," the commoner replied, much to his surprise. the grey-haired man chuckled lightly, surprised at the lack of interest in dates and dance. questions began to form out of interest.

"uncommon for a commoner to say, isn't this every peasant's dream to find a dance partner in these squares?" he turned his head to face the castle. robes were wavering in the wind, with the king's great symbol etched into the material. the wonders with the wind rustled anyone's hair. the music coddled everyone's hopes, no matter the realism or logistics. it seemed that every couple moved in harmony with the beat of the drums.

"i dream of something else," the blue-eyed male simply stated. the open response only arose curiosity within the other. if the pestering didn't stop then, the responses surely kept him close.

"would you like to accompany me for this dance only? hopefully i will know what you dream of afterward," he slyly invited the other for a dance. despite his apparent cold demeanor, he was surprised by the slow nod. perhaps his urge to dance had smitten the other.

"isn't this considered despicable behavior? aren't you afraid of the stares?" the shorter male asked carelessly, and returned to the traditions of folk dance which he was taught. though, for a girl to accompany him. he carefully let the other male his age take his hand, and lead him.

the taller male's smile broadened by the experienced footing by the both of them. though the harmony wasn't found at once, they navigated by looking at one another's movements.

"you'd be surprised what went on behind each military tent," he replied with an airy chuckle. the other nearly stopped in his tracks, before widening his eyes. he couldn't tell the taller was of important status.

"you are a soldier?" he couldn't help but ask, and simultaneously keep up with his consistent dancing. he shamelessly found himself twirling once by nature, with his thin cloak swirling as a dress would.

"was," he replied once they faced each other again. it made sense how people's eyes were only between two people. neither of them looked anywhere else than each other's faces and movements.

"may i ask about the circumstances?" he asked politely, and watched for his expression to change. yet, he was met with a small smile. his eyes concealed another emotion he couldn't read.

"i left with my best friend, who lost his lover in a battle," he simply stated. the other one was struck by the news. he simply frowned amidst having the sunlight warm his hair. the soldier only upheld the kind smile. the beat of the drum quieted down, with each instrument following.

the music of applause was only heard, with occasional whistling and mumbles. the ex-soldier kindly clapped lightly at their dance. with the music lowered, they could listen to each other's stories easily.

"i'm the breadwinner in my family," he shared, which widened the soldier's smile for unknown reasons.

"i could tell. the cloak is quite symbolic, no?" he inquired, and pointed to the slik-like cloak. he was no master of material and sowing.

"i rightfully treat myself, with my efforts. shouldn't you do the same?" he proudly fastened his knuckles around the cloak's hems. the soldier only looked up in thought, but seemingly chuckled bitterly.

"my efforts won't be appreciated even if i ended up in a grave. another reason why i left, after all," he bitterly spoke, without any ill intent toward the commoner. it seemed that he burst a bubble before the blue eyes. his expression turned to confusion. soldiers weren't of high status? they had to be, according to all the tales and what father told him.

"what's your name?" he had to ask. if he were one of the royal soldiers, his name would have to be made famous. his form was built, and it was clear why he was accepted into the military. he must have been one of the front men, for all the commoner knew.

"bokuto koutarou," he spoke freely. the other male only looked down at his feet, knowing well he didn't recognize the name. as a commoner, he felt the stress form knots in the pit of his stomach. bokuto didn't look offended by his incompetency.

"the names of soldiers aren't memorized as we were told numerous times," bokuto shrugged his shoulders. he had no intention to make his story a tearful one. yet, the commoner seemed conflicted by the newfound information.

"you have a lot in common with us peasants, then," he shed humor onto the information. bokuto was surprised by the comment, but chuckled in response. to the commoner's disbelief, bokuto didn't see any harm or illness with the statement. it wasn't far off from the truth.

"may i ask your name, breadwinner?" he asked the comedian of a commoner. the shorter only thought for a second. before bokuto retracted his questions, he was surprised to be met with a pretty name.

"akaashi, keiji," akaashi replied honestly. that would be the end of the conversation, if bokuto wasn't interested.

"well, akaashi. i was wrong about earlier," bokuto's smile made up emotions of slyness. akaashi only anticipated a lowly comment about his people.

"you weren't missing a date. an ocean of available dates missed out on you," bokuto brought his evident beauty to the surface. the bold statement wouldn't mean much, as they wouldn't cross paths again. one last look at akaashi, and his expression was befuddled. if bokuto was successful, perhaps he felt charmed? akaashi couldn't reply, before bokuto added one last advice.

"don't even let royals near your hand," bokuto advised, and eyed the top of his head to his very chin. akaashi gulped at the compliment, knowing very well he referred to his beauty.

as he made the mistake of looking down, bokuto koutarou blended in with the crowds toward the exit.
as for the soldier, he only smiled proudly for flirting with a beautiful man for the first time in his life.
