I research emerging extradisciplinary technologies within other sectors and evaluate their potential applications as solutions to addressing contemporary archaeological and anthropological challenges relating to: high-def digital documentation, visualization, education, dissemination, immersion and interaction with vulnerable cultural and natural heritage resources around the globe.
I focus heavily on multimodal techniques, methods, and methodological solutions that are exclusively non-destructive, non-invasive, or non-contact. Using archaeological prospection as a framework, my experience and interests span technologies from aerial archaeology using a powered parachute; to 3D laser scanning/LiDAR on the ground, air, or water; to Android/Glassware and iOS app/software development to expand digital visualization of archaeological information via augmented reality (AR).
Immediate projects include (as #GoogleExplorer Program’s first anthropologist/archaeologist) utilizing Google Glass as a hands-free digital documentation and communications bridge from the field to the classroom.
Various internships with Federal partners, such as the National Park Service (Southeast Archeological Center—SEAC, and National Center for Preservation Technology and Training—NCPTT) exposed me to new ways of viewing and handling the challenges within the realms of archaeology and historic preservation.
Specialties: Archaeology, Technoarchaeology, Augmented Reality, Ubiquitous Computing within Anthropology, Emerging Technology Integration within Anthropology, Digital Anthropology, Cultural Resources, Heritage Resources, Cultural Resource Management (CRM), Social Networking,
Over the next few years, the way archaeology is conducted, its traditional methods both in the field and in the lab, will literally be transformed. New, advanced spatial technologies and software and computer visualization are becoming part of the archaeologist’s toolbox. These technologies include GIS, GPS, terrestrial laser scanning, 3D printing, haptic devices, aerial LiDAR, remote sensing, mega and gigapixel imaging, photogrammetry, and computerized and integrated spatial database systems and cluster analysis. I am excited about teaching, research, mentoring, and developing interests in students for the next generation of archaeologists who will routinely use these new technologies.
Examples of how I am bringing these technologies and challenges to students can be seen here:

I am also teaching in new ways with 3D learning content, utilizing USF’s Advanced Visualization Center.

I am working on a number of grants and research projects in the South and Northeast United States and Florida involving GIS sensitivity modeling for climatic change impacts to cultural resources, NAGPRA site documentation with spatial technologies for repatriation efforts, and heritage conservation and preservation of fragile archaeological resources. I have collaborative research efforts in Guatemala and Mexico involving 3D documentation of carved stone monuments and landscapes, and the development of software and visualization tools for analysis and interpretation.
