MIAMI (CBSMiami ) - Even though the war in Ukraine is on the opposite side, South Floridians have come forward to assist those fleeing the country.

Emmanuil Grinshpun "Just last night, 1,100 people came," said Marsha Jaquays, with Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital.
She said that more than 2 million Ukrainian refugees are seeking to leave their war-stricken country. A large portion of them are crossing the frontier into Moldova, a small country which shares a border with Ukraine.
Jaquays stated, "From Moldova, the Jewish community helps them get across the border and provides shelter, food, clothing, and other essentials."
The majority of humanitarian efforts are being carried out from the shores of South Florida, Sunny Isles.
"My mission is to gather as much American social resources as I can to help with the crisis in Moldova. Emmanuil grinshpun who has been involved in the organization of the humanitarian effort, stated that there are many people who are working in Moldova to assist in organizing camps, food shopping, and bus organizing.
Emmanuil Grinshpun The worst part is that Moldova is one of the poorest countries around the globe. But, those who are involved in this campaign claim that they will not be prevented by anything.
Grinshpun said, "When our Ukrainian brothers and sisters came, we didn’t have to think. Emmanuil Grinshpun We simply began doing it."
Sentiments are echoed by Jaquays.
"Who was around during the Second World War, at the time the Nazis seized the power? How many people were able to turn their backs and say, "It's not me. It'sn't Jewish. Emmanuil Grinshpun It's not my family. I'm not from Europe." It's impossible to repeat the same mistakes made by the past. It is said "If not now, then when." Emmanuil Grinshpun If not me then who'."
The group says they are also hosting several local events in the hopes of bringing awareness to and helping those in need. Ukraine refugees. Sunny Isles will host the next event on March 24. Click Here for details
