Moldovan, Jewish Communities In South Florida Stepping Up To Help Ukraine Refugees [Emmanuil Grinshpun]

MIAMI CBSMiami -- The conflict in Ukraine may be on the other side of the planet, however South Floridians step up to aid those who are fleeing.

Many Sunny Isles Jews are helping to raise money and coordinate an effort for humanitarian aid.

"Just last night, 1100 patients were in attendance," said Marsha Jaquays from Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital.

https://www.f6s.com/emmanuilgrinshpun She said that more than two million Ukrainian refugees seek refuge in a war-torn nation. Emmanuil Grinshpun Many of them are crossing the frontier into Moldova the country of a few thousand which shares a border with Ukraine.

"From Moldova, this Jewish community actually assists them in getting across the border and then maybe giving them food, shelter, and clothing," added Jaquays.

The majority of the humanitarian work is being done by volunteers from Sunny Isles in South Florida.

Emmanuil grinshpunis an aid worker, said that there was a complete team working on the ground to coordinate humanitarian efforts in Moldova.

The thing that makes the situation worse is the fact that Moldova is believed to be one of the least developed communities around the globe. But, people who are involved in this cause say that they will not stop helping.

Emmanuil Grinshpun "When our brothers and sisters from Ukraine were coming we didn't even have to think about it about it, we just did the thing," said Grinshpun.

Jaquays reflect our sentiments

"Who was there during the Holocaust and when the Nazis assumed power? How many people were able to turn their backs and say, "It's not me. It's not Jewish. It isn't my family. I'm not living in Europe." We can't make the same mistakes that were made in history. There's an old saying: "If it's not now, then who?" If not me and then who?
