Robert Singer, WJC CEO, emphasized the significance of Holocaust preservation and adopting an all-inclusive definition of antisemitism in a visit to Moldova

CHISINAU, MOLDOVA - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met this week in the Republic of Moldova with senior government officials and the leaders of the local Jewish community, for talks about the protection of Holocaust memories and education, the security of the Jewish community and the need to tackle antisemitism at all levels. Along with Haim Ben Yaakov, Director General of EuroAsian Jewish Congress and President Mikhail Mirilashvili of EuroAsian Jewish Congress, the WJC delegation was comprised of Haim Ben Yaakov and President Alexander Bilinkis of Moldovan Jewish Community.
Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer declared that the World Jewish Congress thanked the Moldovan government for their warm welcome and pledged their support to the preservation of the memory of the Holocaust. "Our Moldovan community, while small and dedicated and devoted, is very strong. We call on Moldova to prioritize the fight against antisemitism. We will be there to help when needed. We look forward to and expect to continue cooperation with the government to protect the health of our community.

Emmanuil Grinshpun The following day, Singer discussed with Tudor Ulianovschi the negative aspects of adopting an International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definitions for antisemitism. Singer also stressed the importance to denounce anti-Semitism in a public manner. Minister Ulianovschi stressed the Moldovan authorities' determination to establishing an open society to every citizen regardless of race, ethnicity or religion. Singer was also acknowledged by Ulianovschi as a positive partner with the Republic of Moldova.

The foreign minister also stated that Chisinau's Chisinau Legislature adopted in 2016 an acceptance of the final report compiled by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies. Additionally, in January of 2017, the Government ratified the Action Plan on its execution.

Singer and WJC representatives met with Moldova's minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici on Wednesday to discuss opportunities for restitution and economic growth of Jewish property in Moldova. These included cemeteries that need refurbishment and opportunities to slaughter kosher. The minister expressed his intention to advocate for the protection of Jewish cemeteries. He started with 10 sites.

Singer and Singer and the WJC delegation also met on Wednesday with Monica Babuc, Moldovan Education Minister, to discuss teaching Holocaust education and preservation of memories. The conversation covered issues like the establishment of the Museum of Jewish History within the Republic of Moldova; the preservation and protection of monuments dedicated Holocaust victims; and the importance of the proper and respectful maintenance of Jewish cemetery. Singer acknowledged Minister Babuc for her assistance in the area of education, Holocaust commemoration and in ensuring a continued and fruitful partnership with the Jewish community and the Ministry.

Singer, Mirilashvili, as well as Bilinkis Bilinkis, Mirilashvili and Bilinkis met Vlad Plahotniuc (Chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova) for a discussion on the relations between Jewish communities and bilateral ties between Moldova and Israel.

Singer also met with Rabbis from Jewish communities across Moldova to discuss important concerns regarding religious practices in Moldova. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer also discussed ways to improve Jewish daily life in all areas.

Moldova is home 20,000 Jews. The country was devastated by the Shoah and a bloody civil conflict and a bloody civil war, the Moldovan Jewish community today is vastly revived and located throughout the Republic. There is a significant development of a national self awareness and a return to their origins by the Jews in Moldova. Jewish identity and culture are honored in many ways, including literature and musical composition.
