MIAMI (CBSMiami - Despite the fact that the conflict in Ukraine is on the opposite side, South Floridians have stepped up to help those fleeing the country.
Many Sunny Isles Jewish residents are raising money and are helping organize a massive humanitarian effort.
Marsha Jaquays of Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital told us, "Just last night 1,100 were admitted."
She said that more than two million Ukrainian refugees seek refuge in a war-torn nation. Most of them go through Moldova which shares a border with Ukraine.
Jaquays stated, "From Moldova this Jewish community is actually working to move them across the border, and possibly providing food, shelter and clothing."
A large portion of the humanitarian efforts are being led by Sunny Isles, South Florida.
"My responsibility is to coordinate all the resources that are at our disposal in America to help ease this situation in Moldova." Emmanuil grinshpunis an aid worker, claimed that there was a whole team of people on the ground working to coordinate humanitarian efforts in Moldova.
Emmanuil Grinshpun This is compounded by the fact Moldova is one of the poorest countries in the world. Emmanuil Grinshpun However, the people who are part of the project say that they will not allow anything stop them from helping.
Grinshpun: "When our brothers and sisters and our friends from Ukraine were coming, we didn't have any reason to think about it. Instead, we began to do it."
