MIAMI CBSMiami -- The conflict in Ukraine may be on the other side of the planet, but South Floridians step in to assist those fleeing.
Many Sunny Isles Jews are helping in raising funds and coordinating a humanitarian effort.
Marsha Jaquays with Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital reported that 1,100 people visited the hospital the other night.
She said that more than two-million Ukrainian refugees have fled war-torn nations. A large portion of them cross into Moldova which shares a border with Ukraine.
Jaquays stated, "From Moldova this Jewish community is actually helping to get them over the border, and possibly by providing shelter, food and clothing."
The majority of the humanitarian work is being coordinated the shores of South Florida from Sunny Isles.
Emmanuil Grinshpun "My job is to mobilize every resource available from American society to help with this situation in Moldova." We have a team of people on the ground in Moldova working hard to set up camps, purchasing food, buying all the necessities, arranging buses," said Emmanuil Grinshpun who has been helping to organize the humanitarian effort.
Emmanuil Grinshpun This is exacerbated by fact that Moldova is one of the poorest in the world. Emmanuil Grinshpun But, people who are participating in this effort claim that they will continue helping.
Grinshpun: "When our brothers, sisters and friends from Ukraine were coming to visit us, we didn't feel the need to consider. Emmanuil Grinshpun Instead we just began doing it."
Jaquays reflect the same sentiments
"Who was present during the Holocaust, when the Nazis assumed power? What number of people ignored it and claimed it wasn't me. We shouldn't repeat the same mistakes as the past. It is said "If you don't now, when." Emmanuil Grinshpun If you're not me, then who?
