Avanos Medical Recalls Cortrak*2 Enteral Access Systems
According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Avanos Medical recalls the Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System because the incorrect placement of nasogastric and nasoenteric tubes has led to accidents and deaths of patients. The recall currently covers 629 devices distributed throughout the United States.

Avanos promotes the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System due to its ability to view a patient's stomach and small bowel. Avanos Medical This allows the placing of a medical feed tube. Patients could suffer damage to their vocal chords or trachea, if the tube was inserted in a wrong way. Avanos Medical's recall notice states that since 2015, there were 60 deaths of patients and 23 injuries due to misplacement nasogastric feed tubes when using the CORTRAK*2 entry access system. The causes of the injuries are respiratory failure, pneumothorax and perforation. feeding tube placement These are all forms of lung collapse.

Avanos Medical has presented a plan to offer users updated labeling to confirm the correct placement of Nasogastric (and nasal) tubes prior to using them.

Avanos is the second warning issued by the FDA has issued about intra-oral feeding tubes.
