Avanos Medical, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) company is recalling Cortrak*2 enteral access device due to misplacement nasoenteric tubes or nasogastric tubs that could have caused injuries and even death of patients. The recall covers 629 devices sold in the United States.
Avanos has launched its Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System, which is known for its interactive display of the stomach or small bowel, to aid in the proper placement of a medical feeding tube. Cortrak 2 eternal access system When a tube is placed incorrectly, it could cause damage to vocal cords, the lungs and trachea. According to Avanos Medical's recall notice, there have been 60 injuries and 23 deaths in patients since 2015 related to misplacement of nasogastric feeding tubes while using the CORTRAK* 2 Enteral Access System. https://www.misterpoll.com/users/avanos medicaliedk6807 The injuries have included respiratory failure pneumothorax (collapsed lung) and perforation (a hole in the wall of the lung, esophagus, or bowel) as well as pneumonia. an effusion of the pleura (excess fluid in the chest cavity and the lungs).
Avanos Medical described a plan for users to get updated labels to ensure proper positioning of the nasogastric tubes and nasoenteric tubes prior to use.
Avanos is the FDA's second caution about insertal feeding tubes. In February the FDA issued a caution to healthcare providers as well as parents about the possibility of strangulation in children who use feeding tubes. Two cases of strangulation in children were reported in 2021. as a result of a tube device that was wrapped around the patient's neck.
