According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Avanos Medical is recalling the Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System due to misplacement of nasoenteric or nasogastric tubes has caused injuries and patient deaths. The recall currently comprises 629 devices distributed throughout the United States.
Avanos markets its Cortrak*2 enteral access system for its visualisation of the patient's small bowel and stomach, which aids in placing a medical feeding tube. Avanos Medical released a recall statement stating that there had been a total of 60 accidents and 23 deaths resulting from the misplacement of a tube in 2015 due to the CORTRAK*2 Access System. The injuries can be described as pneumothorax, respiratory failure, and perforation. These are all types of lung collapse.
Avanos Medical has presented a plan to provide users updated labeling to confirm the correct place of the nasogastric (and nasal) tubes prior to their use.
