Avanos Medical Recalls The Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System
Avanos Medical, a U.S. feeding tube placement Food & Drug Administration (FDA) company, is recalling Cortrak*2 enteral access device due to misplacement nasoenteric tubes or nasogastric tubs, which could have resulted in injuries or even patient deaths. The recall includes 629 devices that were sold in the United States.

Avanos has marketed the Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System, which is known for its interactive display of the stomach or small bowel, to aid in the proper positioning of a medical feed tube. When a tube is placed incorrectly, it could cause damage to the vocal cords, lungs , and trachea. Avanos Medical released a recall communication stating that there has been sixty injuries and 23 deaths from mistaken placement, in 2015, because of the CORTRAK*2 Entry Access System. Avanos Mediacal Cortrak 2 The causes of the injuries are pneumothorax, respiratory failure and perforation. These are all forms of lung collapse.

Avanos Medical outlined a plan that will allow patients to get updated labels so they can verify the location of nasogastric and other tubes prior to them being employed

The Avanos warning is the second caution the FDA issued in 2022 concerning the use of enteral feeding tubes.
