It's not surprising that the world's populace is increasing. The world is projected to have 9.7 billion people by 2050.1 However, the land available for farming in the world is not expanding at the same pace as ours. This poses serious challenges for farmers responsible to produce enough high-quality food for Canadians and others all over the world.
Canada is the 5th largest global exporter.2 Canadian farmers play a crucial role in supplying food for all. They will be required to provide more food items than ever before.
Farmers will need 70 percent more food production by 2050 to meet the growing population. *Source How to feed the world by 2050 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

This increasing demand is simply too much for farmers to handle on their own. Modern tools and technology, like herbicides like Glyphosate, allow farmers to control weeds efficiently and precisely, resulting in a more sustainable, secure supply of food.
What is glyphosate exactly?
Glyphosate is an adaptable herbicide that is non-selective, and is used by land managers, farmers and gardeners across the globe for more than 40 years. https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/27b487520290203887047fd4ea5eb2ea44702279 It acts by reducing the activity of enzymes that the plants (in this example, unwanted weeds) require to develop. These enzymes don't exist in humans or any other animals.4 Therefore, glyphosate poses no danger to any of them when applied properly.
Glyphosate can be utilized in other fields other that are not related to agriculture. It is used by municipalities in urban green spaces to safeguard wildlife and people from the harmful effects of weeds.6 Also, it is employed in railways to keep conductors visible and to prevent fires.
Recently, the spotlight has been on glyphosate's usage in modern life and how it's used. While it is important to think about what goes into our food and beverages It is also important to note that more 160 health regulatory authorities including Health Canada have agreed that glyphosate, when properly used is safe to consume by humans.
Canadians will be better equipped to understand what glyphosate is and how it operates, and why it is so important for food production.
Why should glyphosate be utilized in agriculture?
Glyphosate-based herbicides are used in the field of agriculture, benefiting consumers, farmers, the environment, and everybody else. It is crucial to efficient controlling weeds, secure food supply, sustainability of the environment and sustainable weed control. Let's examine each of them.
In the world farmers are losing 30-40 percent of their crops due to weeds, pests and disease.9 If they don't employ techniques to protect their crops and practices, the loss could be doubled according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. This is a huge cost for farmers, especially considering the crops they grow as their main source of income.
Farmers are able to depend on the tools they depend on year after year. The application of glyphosate to fields that have glyphosate-tolerant crops is a proven method to keep weeds that are destructive away from their crop.
The battle between weeds and crops -- The battle of their lives
Glyphosate is a herbicide which can give crops a chance.
Canadians and other consumers around the world enjoy the benefits of plentiful cheap, healthy food items
The population is increasing and half of the land that is used for food production in Canada is at risk of becoming unusable in 40 years.10 This is leading us to a greater risk of food security issues. Canadians are likely to pay 55% less for food, if there is no modern farming innovations such as the use of glyphosate.11
Not only that food items we love eating are becoming increasingly difficult to get. Thanks to plant science, farmers will be able to cultivate more of our most-loved meals over time.
Glyphosate can help to manage weeds and maintain affordable produce in the supermarket. Glyphosate also aids farmers to take care of what Cherilyn Jolli-Nagle Saskatchewan farmer, calls "their most precious asset" the land they own.
The food we love is always on the table
Farmers can grow better by using crop protection tools (including the glyphosate) are used to protect crops from pests or diseases.
42% more grain such as wheat and corn
72% More Fruit
83% more vegetables and potatoes12
These are the benefits that are obvious. But is Glyphosate safe?
グリホサート The answer is yes. グリホサート As with all pesticides, it must be applied according to the label directions. Canada has two regulatory bodies for glyphosate. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which inspects crops to determine whether there is any pesticide residue. The other is the Pest Management Regulating Agency (PMRA) is the one that gives the regulations as well as product evaluations and approvals (or refusals) and also has one of the largest evaluation procedures throughout the world.
While regulatory agencies are responsible for ensuring that farmers use the correct herbicides as well as manufacturers, farmers play an important part in ensuring that glyphosate can be employed safely and in a way that is safe to use, ensuring that there is no unintended harm to animals, the natural environment, or humans.
A combination of technology improvements and precision agriculture allows farmers to use data to make precise applications of glyphosate. This includes the location and amount.
Glyphosate residues are rarely found in food products. It could cause harm if it is detected at certain limits. CFIA ensures that farmers apply herbicides in a safe and efficient manner and keep within the established residue limits.
Sustainable farming practices are a part of the use of Glyphosate
In an integrated pest/weed control system, farmers employ herbicides, such as glyphosate. グリホサート They utilize more than one herbicide to fight the weeds. Glyphosate has allowed them to use conservation tillage or no-till practices that provide long-term benefits to soil, air and our environment as a whole, including:
- To reduce or eliminate plowing or tilling of land
- Reduction in CO2 emissions
Capturing carbon in the soil
- Improving soil health
- Reducing water runoff and limiting erosion13
"No pesticide regulator anywhere in the world considers that glyphosate poses risk to human health at the moment." - Health Canada (January 11, 2019).
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. グリホサート How to Feed the Whole World by 2050
Ensuring Canadian farmers have the equipment, tools and support they need to meet the growing food demands of an increasing population is more important now than at any time in the past.
The most effective agricultural, food safety and pest control practices can help keep our food supply plentiful and safe. Glyphosate isn't the only tool they'll use to ensure that Canadians are able to access healthy, affordable food in the future.
