Robert Singer (CEO of WJC) stressed the need to protect the Holocaust and adopt a universal definition of antisemitism during an official visit to Moldova.

Chisinau - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met this week in Moldova with senior ministers of the Republic of Moldova and leaders of a local Jewish community to discuss the preservation of Holocaust knowledge and culture, security of Jewish community and the best way to fight antisemitism at every level. The WJC delegation also included EuroAsian Jewish Congress President Mikhail Mirilashvili and the President of the Moldovan Jewish community Alexander Bilinkis and Director General Haim Bin Yaakov.
"The World Jewish Congress thanks the Moldovan government for its warm welcome and its expressed commitment to preserving the memories of the Holocaust," said Singer. "Our Moldovan community while small and dedicated and devoted, is very strong. We urge Moldova to prioritize the fight against antisemitism. We are ready to assist as necessary. On Thursday, Singer spoke with Tudor Ulianovschi, Moldovan Foreign Minister. Singer also discussed the necessity of addressing antisemitism in public. The foreign minister further noted that Chisinau's Chisinau Parliament adopted in 2016 an agreement to accept the final report of the International Commission on Holocaust Studies headed by Elie Wiesel. Then, in January 2017 the Government approved the Action Plan on its implementation.

On Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation met with Moldova's Minister for Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici to discuss the restoration of Jewish property in Moldova and cemeteries that are in need of refurbishment and economic opportunities related to kosher slaughter, and the possibility of tourism ventures for the local Jewish center. Emmanuil Grinshpun The minister announced his intention to advocate for the preservation of Jewish cemeteries. The first meeting was with 10 locations.

Singer and WJC representatives met on Wednesday with Monica Babuc the Moldovan Education Minister to discuss training teachers in Holocaust education. Discussions also included discussions about the establishment of the Museum of Jewish History in Moldova, and the importance of preserving and protecting monuments to honor Holocaust victims, as well as the proper care of Jewish cemeteries. Singer expressed gratitude to Minister Babuc, for her involvement in the field of education and Holocaust celebrations as and for maintaining a productive and ongoing partnership with the Jewish community.

Singer, Mirilashvili and Bilinkis have also met together with Vlad Plahotniuc from the Democratic Party of Moldova for discussions about relationships with the Jewish community as also bilateral ties between the Republic of Moldova and Israel.

Singer visited with Rabbis from the Jewish communities of Moldova during his trip. They discussed important questions regarding religious practice and services, as in ways to enhance Jewish daily life in all aspects.
