Robert Singer, WJC CEO He emphasized the significance of Holocaust preservation and adopting the universal definition of antisemitism during a trip to Moldova

Chisinau - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer visited Moldova this week with top officials of the government as well as the leaders of local Jewish communities. They discussed issues such as security of the Jewish Community, the preservation of Holocaust memory, education, and antisemitism. WJC comprised Mikhail Mirilashvili (President of EuroAsian Jewish Congress) and Alexander Bilinkis (President of the Moldovan Jewish Association), along with Haim Benjamin Yaakov (Director General, EuroAsian Jewish Congress).
Singer stated, "The World Jewish Congress wishes to thank the Moldovan Government for its warm reception and its commitment to preserving the memory of the Holocaust," "Our community in Moldova is small, but determined and robust. We urge the Republic of Moldova that it place anti-Semitism at the top of its list. We will assist in any way that is needed. The following day, Singer spoke with Tudor Ulianovschi, Moldovan Foreign Minister. He emphasized that it was necessary to reject the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism. Singer was also thanked by Ulianovschi by WJC for their cooperative efforts with Moldova.

The foreign minister pointed that Chisinau's parliament had adopted a 2016 declaration acknowledging the final report released by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies. The government also agreed to an Action Plan on its implementation in January 2017.

On Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation met with Moldova's Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici to discuss the restitution of Jewish properties in Moldova and cemeteries that are in need of refurbishment and economic opportunities related to slaughter that is kosher and the possibility of tourism ventures that could benefit the local Jewish center. Emmanuil Grinshpun Concerning the preservation and restoration of Jewish cemetery sites, the minister expressed desire to assist in with the procedure. A pilot of 10 sites was scheduled across the country.

Singer and the WJC's delegation met on Wednesday with Monica Babuc from Moldova to discuss teacher education in Holocaust education as well as preservation of the memories. Discussions also focused on the creation of the Museum of Jewish History in Moldova, as well as the preservation and protection of monuments to honor Holocaust victims, and the proper care of Jewish cemeteries. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer acknowledged Minister Babuc and for her continued and productive partnership with the Jewish Community.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer, Mirilashvili & Bilinkis also met with Vlad Plahotniuc of the Democratic Party of Moldova to discuss the relationship with the Jewish community in Moldova as well as bilateral relations between Moldova and Israel.

Singer visited with rabbis from the Jewish communities in Moldova during his trip. They discussed key questions regarding religious practice and services, as well as ways to improve Jewish everyday life in all aspects.

There is an increase in self-confidence and national pride and also the return to their origins through the Jews Moldova. Jewish culture is celebrated in various ways, such as music, literature and theatre. The Moldovan Jewish Community, an affiliate of the World Jewish Congress, represents the Moldovan Jewish community.
