Pomona Catholic School Summer Reading Program/2022-2023

As a dedicated student of Pomona Catholic School, it is vitally important that you
continue to grow as a thinker and as a writer over the summer months. After all, Honors
English is an extremely rigorous and challenging course, so it is important to keep your
analytical mind “fresh” over the summer. It is also important that you also read a variety
of interesting books to instill in yourself a great love of reading. As a note, the better
analysts and the better writers are often those who read a lot! Here are the directions for
your summer reading assignment:
1. Please read Ray Bradbury's 1953 novel, Fahrenheit 451. ISBN: 978-1451673319
Summary of the novel: Ray Bradbury's 1953 novel Fahrenheit 451 is set in a dystopian
society that burns books in order to control dangerous ideas and unhappy concepts.
The novel tells the story of Guy Montag, a fireman who questions the book-burning
policy and experiences suffering and tremendous learning as a result. Note: Please take
extensive notes as you read for maximum understanding. I will check your notes when
you return to school. Create a reading schedule for yourself. One hour every night before
you go to bed? A few grades are riding on this project.
2. Please create a beautiful art project as inspired by the reading material. You can
create:
a. A diorama of a scene from the book
b. A movie poster as inspired by the book (standard poster board size)
c. A short film (10 minutes long in length at least)
d. A sculpture
e. A painting (8.5’ x 11’ standard size at least)
f. A costume as inspired by the novel, one that a person can actually wear
g. A handmade puppet of a character from the novel (any fabric style, no paper
bags)
Note: Ensure that a one page analysis of the novel is attached to your project. Did you
enjoy the novel? Why or why not? Cite two of your most favorite moments of the novel.
Why these? Who is your favorite character/s? Why? Explain. What do you feel is the
central theme of the novel? Explain.

Project Grading Rubric:
Artistic Effort and Creativity 50%
Beautifully written, one page, single-spaced paper which adheres to the rules of
grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation etc 30%
Turned in on time the first full day of classes, all periods 20%
Note: There will be a contest for best projects! Win yourself a prize with your
outstanding effort!
3. You will be tested on the reading, the first block day of the new semester. Please be
ready. The test will feature both an objective (Q & A) and subjective (Essay) portion. If
you receive a D or F on the test, you will lose your place in Honors English. Please be
warned.
