In the latter half of the 1980s researchers discovered plant genes and microbial genes which conferred higher herbicide tolerance. In 1987, the USDA approved the first field study of Roundup Ready crops. It was the first field test conducted for Roundup Ready tomato plants. After a few years, the bacterial gene which would eventually become the Roundup Ready trait was discovered, isolated and introduced into plants.

Let's consider soybeans as an illustration. First, we need to address two issues. What is Roundup Ready soybeans and how do they make them?
