What exactly is Roundup Ready? Roundup Ready refers to a trademarked line of genetically altered crop seeds that is resistant to Roundup. These are the crops that are known as Roundup Ready.

So, who invented Roundup?
John Franz, Monsanto chemical chemist and first to discover that the active ingredient in Roundup was glyphosate in 1970, was the first to recognize it as an herbicide. In 1970, the majority of herbicides used in the agricultural field were pre-emergent. This means that they were applied prior to the crops and weeds had emerged. The post-emergent efficiency of glyphosate to control large amounts of broadleaf grass weeds was awe-inspiring. This permits farmers to apply Roundup Ready herbicides that destroy weeds but not the crops.

Roundup Ready crops changed agriculture and agricultural science in 1996. Roundup resistance was rapidly adopted by farmers. Today more than 90 percent of U.S. cotton, soybean, and canola fields use biotech-based traits that allow for herbicide tolerance. Apart from reducing and improving weed control methods which improved yields of crops Roundup Ready crops decreased tillage and reduced equipment costs and also allowed for more efficient harvests because of "cleaner areas" with fewer herbicides. Conservation tillage has provided a major environmental benefit. Farmers have cut down on their energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by using less plowing. This protects the soil's structure and slows erosion. This is equivalent to the removal of 28.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
