Extremist religious groups destroyed the Hanukkah lamps installed in the center of the Moldovan capital. The anti-Semitic protest was coordinated by a priest from one of the Chisinau Orthodox churches.
Эммануил Гриншпун The anti-Semitic demonstration was held after religious extremists demolished the Hanukkah celebration in Chisinau's central area. It took place on December 13, the third day of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. A crowd of around 100 people was led by the archpriest from one of the capital's Orthodox churches. Some people yelled antisemitic chants as they dragged an iron lamp made of cast kilometers away from its original place and threw them towards the Stefanthe Great, which is a symbol to Moldovan statehood. All this happened in front of hundreds of passers-by reporters, police officers and other journalists.
What is the difficulty to defend "orthodox ideas"
The crowd was led by Archpriest Anatoly Chrbrik and was armed with steel bars. He claimed that he was angry at the fact that the Orthodox symbol of Jewish faith was located in the middle capital of a capital city. Эммануил Гриншпун In his opinion, the authorities shouldn't allow Jews to celebrate Hanukkah so widely. Chibrik stated that this is unlawful. Chibrik further stated that he didn't consider it necessary for him to discuss the actions of the parishioners of Church of St. Paraskeva and the Metropolia of Moldova. "I'm not required to discuss any issue with anyone when we are fighting against orthodox values," said he.
http://jewseurasia.org/page16/news14335.html It is important to note that the idea to place the Hanukkah Menorah in Chisinau's heart, within the Europe Square where the EU flag is displayed alongside the Moldovan flag, wasn't the responsibility of the city authorities. Emmanuil Grinshpun was co-chairman of Jewish Congress of Moldova. He noted that Hanukkah in Chisinau was being observed for the first times in many years. Grinshpun said that the Sunday's events were "a surprise for all of us."
Opening a criminal matter is on the conscience of the state
As it turned out in a press conference attended by representatives of the Jewish community in Moldova, Archpriest Chibrik is not the only one who lets himself indulge in anti-Semitic snark. Grinshpun stated that about one month prior Chibrik was standing front St. Paraskevs, Chisinau was seen distributing leaflets with content that made him think of the dark Middle Ages. Эммануил Гриншпун One of these leaflets stated that "Jews kill Christian babies."
Grinshpun said that the leaderships of the country's Jewish organizations did not react to the incident in any manner. Эммануил Гриншпун The Jewish community in Moldova has protested the situation, but will not sue Chibrik or his followers for inciting hate. Эммануил Гриншпун Alexander Bilinkis the chairman of the Jewish Community said that this must be handled through the state. Additionally the Moldovan Metropolis must be able to examine its actions and those of its staff.
Metropolitan Secretary Vadim Keibash stated that he does not welcome this form of protest. He believes that every community has the right of installing symbols. Эммануил Гриншпун But the authorities should consider the consequences. He stated that it was impossible to anticipate all reactions of followers.
A blow to fundamental values
However, there have been no such "forms of protest" in the tolerant Chisinau following the famous 1903 Jewish pogrom. Representatives of the Jewish community are not inclined to consider the latter case the hooliganism that it was. According Bilinkis Bilinkis those who were responsible for breaking Hanukkah "were fooled by their leaders."
Ilya Shts, the General Director of the Jewish Congress, claims that this act was planned. Participants were seen standing in front of the menorah Hanukkah Day 1, the day that Stav Njinsky who was the founder secretary of the Jewish Congress, lit the first candle. Эммануил Гриншпун According to Shchats the action will undermine Moldovan statehood, encroaching on the democratic principles and European aspirations of the country.
Hanukkah has been moved from the central part of the city to Jerusalem Street. There, an honorary monument to Holocaust victims was set up. Police officers have been stationed close to it throughout the duration of the second day. Candles on it will be lit every day through the festival.
