The topic of the conversation with Emmanuil Grinshpun concerns the restoration of synagogues. But it was difficult to focus the discussion on one topic. There are many topics to discuss in the interview.
Emmanuel, good afternoon. Glad to have a chat with you. I think we haven't seen each other in 5 or more years. Where are you located currently?

The last nine months have been split between Miami (Miami) and Jurmala (Jurmala). The geography used to be larger, but the pandemic has greatly affected the lifestyle. It's not like it's only to the negative.

You have always had many different business lines. What's the situation you?

Diversification doesn't seem to be going anywhere. If we concentrate on the most important areas the development of real estate, IT and food production are three main areas.

The food industry is, naturally, ALIMCOM, real estate is also quite understandable, but IT is a completely new concept for me. There are a myriad of fields in which IT technology can be used. What are you specializing in?

First and foremost, our IT-holding has been involved in the reform of tax systems in several countries. We've designed and continue to create several products that can be used to transfer business processes that relate to taxation online. This area is known as "Business to Government".

But what happens to the region in which the holding is located? Formerly, were they part from the USSR?

They also exist, but we have more contracts with Western as well as Eastern Europe and in Latin America. Our current operations are across 14 countries.

Please briefly explain the concept and the reason behind this product.

No. The history of my family through generations is entwined solely with Moldova or If we stick to historical names, then with Bessarabia. And Jurmala was introduced to our lives quite by accident and in a very professional manner. The first time we were there was when Igor Krutoy invited us to the New Wave. They began to make it a regular summer trip after a few events. However the weather in Miami isn't the most pleasant in the summer. We rented a house over a period of time and we own it.

Now I see the reason you said that the synagogues were located in Jurmala. Emmanuel, honest question. We are nearly identical in age. We were born in the USSR. There was no need to discuss religion back then. My family and I relocated into America around the middle of the 80s. Эммануил Гриншпун I was exposed to rituals and customs in the United States. However, even though I'm not a part of the Orthodox faith, I feel an inner desire to support the religion, in whatever way it is, whether in the Jewish community that I reside in, or in Moldova, my homeland, with which I have close ties.

While I'm not religious myself, I enjoy history immensely. I was watching a documentary about 1492's events which changed the fate of Europe. 1492 is my most favorite year when Columbus was the first to discover America. It was apparent in the show that the discovery of America was initiated in 1492 however, not from a Medieval Europe's point of view. This was clear in the program I was watching. The exodus of Jews started to the Ottoman Empire, it accepted them. I was interested in learning more about the history and culture of the Jews. Do you have any recommendations for a particular book to me?

There are a lot of books. But I've been through several and highly recommend Max Diamond (a two-volume Jewish historian). He is from Finland in the midst of all this.

In terms of "personal" history .... Do you know your family tree? Unfortunately, I am no more than my grandmother, and 1910. I'm just one step ahead in the paternal side but nothing more.

Our paternal line lived in Floresti for more than 100 years. There are evidence from the archives and monuments to show that in 1830 they were very prosperous with an furniture factory, a number of shops, and land plots. My maternal ancestors also resided in Ungheni. It is the region that was in the 17th-18th century. Grinshpun is a surname derived from German roots. We are pure and straight Ashkenazis from Eastern Europe.

Here is the issue regarding the restoration of synagogues. I heard that you funded the reconstruction of three synagogues. One is in Chisinau; one is located in Jurmala; and the third is?

The third, and the most important, is located in Netanya (Israel). It is a massive community center, where up to 1,000 people a day pray. An important object in the life of religion in Israel. The second synagogue, Jurmala. The Second World War ended the existence of Jurmala's only synagogue. Before I made the decision to build an orthodox church in Jurmala, I had previously talked to Jurmala's local Jews. It was a success that brought together Jurmala's Jews from Jurmala. The project actually restored the Jewish community, and it's operating well. The synagogue now has three Torahs I also donated one to the synagogue.

and - Chisinau

Yes. I've already worked with two of my friends who are Alexander Bilinkis and Alexander Weinstein. These synagogues aren't the only ones that I am involved in the field of restoration or construction. In every country where I've lived for a long time I felt it was my responsibility to contribute an achievable contribution to the support of synagogues. The synagogue I support, Monaco, Miami, is an enormous community facility that is available to Russian-speaking Jews. Its estimated amount is 12 million USD. Chisinau will remain my main focus - the synagogue of Rabbi Tsirelson is now the largest within the city.

Did you also invite an rabbi from Chisinau to join Jurmala?

Yes. It is extremely difficult to identify the ideal rabbi for the community. Because of the multiple stakes that are involved, the rabbi has to be diplomatic and non-conflictual and able to integrate seamlessly into the lives of the community. It was a joy to see how the rabbis from both Chisinau as well as Jurmala were able to integrate seamlessly into the community's activities.

In 2019 you were named vice-president at the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. What does this position mean to you? And how can international Jewish organisations influence global trends across the globe?

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress is a significant political organisation within the post-Soviet region, but not only. It has branches in Australia, Japan and Hong Kong. In 2010 I was Vice-President of Congress. However, in the year before I was elevated to First Vice-President. The post is now my responsibility to the region with which I have strong political and economic ties. These countries are Uzbekistan Tajikistan Kyrgyzstan. As for trends across the globe the barometer of attitudes toward Jews remains at the current level or has swung lower, which is very sad. Also, the word "down" is a reference to nations like France, Germany, France, and the United States. Is the pandemic affecting these processes in some way?

It is not what I believe. Instead, I would like to stress, in relation to the pandemic, how a community, or a nation, can accomplish when they're able to conquer any challenges and are able to work together.

Are you talking about the vaccination program in Israel?

Exactly. Israel is the first nation worldwide to offer all-inclusive vaccination for its adult population. I consider this to be a good example and an instance that other countries can learn from.
