GlyphosateGlyphosate is a green crop choice used by farmers to secure our food supply in the future.
It's clear that world population is growing. The world's population is expected to grow to 9.7 billion by 2050.1 But, it's not happening on farmable land. This presents a number of serious issues for farmers charged with producing enough high-quality food to feed Canadians and the rest of the world.

Canada is currently fifth in global food exports.2 Canadian farmers will play a key role in providing the food we need. They will have more demands than ever before and will also have to control insects, diseases and weather changes to ensure that their land is fertile and productive for the generations to come.

Farmers will need 70 percent more food production by 2050 in order to meet the growing population. *Source: How to Food the World in 2050 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

Farmers can't face this growing demand alone. The good news is that modern technology, including herbicides such glyphosate, and other tools, will assist farmers in controlling herbicides more efficiently and effectively making a sustainable and reliable food supply.

What exactly is Glyphosate?

グリホサート Glyphosate, a multi-purpose and non-selective herbicide has been used by land managers, gardeners as well as farmers across the world for more than 40 years. グリホサート Glyphosate is a chemical that blocks an enzyme that plants, in this case undesirable weeds, require to grow. Glyphosate is safe for humans and animals if it is used in a safe manner.

There are many other applications for glyphosate too. It's utilized in cities to safeguard animals and people from harmful plants.6 It's also utilized for railroads to enhance the visibility for conductors as well as ensure that accidents are not caused on tracks.

In recent years, glyphosate is received more attention and is increasingly being used in our everyday lives. While it's important to question what goes onto and into our food items, it's also important to know that more than 160 government health regulatory agencies including Health Canada, agree that glyphosate is safe for human consumption when employed correctly.8

Canadians will be able to understand what glyphosate is and how it operates and why it's so important for food production.

Why do we use glyphosate in the agriculture?

Glyphosate-based herbicides can benefit consumers, farmers, as well as the environment. It is key to effective control of weeds, a safe food supply, and sustainability for the environment. Let's explore every benefit.

グリホサート Globally farmers lose between 30 and 40% of their crops to weeds, pests and disease.9 Without the use of methods to protect crops the losses could increase by as much as 80% according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. It's a terrible loss, especially for farmers when you consider that these crops are their main source of income.

It's not surprising that farmers are beginning to rely on tools they can rely on, year after year. Glyphosate is an effective way to eliminate destructive weeds from fields, particularly those that are resistant to glyphosate.

Crops and. weeds - the fight of their lives

Glyphosate is a herbicide which can give crops a chance.

Canada and around the world enjoy many benefits Food is plentiful, affordable and cheap.

The population is increasing, and half of today's food-growing land is at risk of becoming unusable within less than 40 years because of desertification and land degradation.10 This has led to more food insecurity. Without modern farming innovations, including the use of glyphosate, Canadians might have to spend 55% more on food.11

Not only that food items we love to eat would be ever more difficult to find. Because of plant science but, the farmers will be able to cultivate sustainably more of our most-loved staple foods for years to in the future.

Glyphosate doesn't just help in removing weeds and maintain the price of produce at the grocery store however. グリホサート Glyphosate can also assist farmers to take care of the land that Cherilyn Jolli-Nagle, a Saskatchewan farmer, calls "their most precious asset" the land they own.

Keep the food we love on our table

Farmers can prosper by using crop protection tools for example, glyphosate. It protects crops from disease and pests.

42% More grains, such as wheat or corn

72 percent more fruit

83% More vegetables and potatoes12

The benefits are evident. But is glyphosate actually safe?

Yes. Like all pesticides, it should be applied according to the label directions. In Canada the use of glyphosate is regulated by both the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) which checks crops for pesticide residue and ensures that farmers are using it correctly, and the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) that provides the regulatory guidelines, product submission evaluations and approvals (or rejections)--and has one of the most intensive evaluation processes throughout the world.14

Although regulatory agencies make sure that farmers use herbicides approved by the FDA in a safe manner Farmers and manufacturers also play an important role in making sure glyphosate has been used correctly and safely to ensure that there is no unintentional harm to animals, the environment as well as human people.

Technology advancements and precision agriculture allows farmers to use data to make precise applications for glyphosate. This includes where and how much.

Glyphosate residue is rarely detected in food items. It can cause damage if it is detected at certain levels. CFIA makes sure that farmers are using herbicides correctly and complying with established limits for residues16. It is extremely uncommon to find glyphosate in food at low levels which is far lower than the Canada's Government's limit.17 Because it doesn't be a danger to animals or humans18

Glyphosate is used in sustainable farming practices

In an integrated pest/weed control system, farmers employ herbicides, such as glyphosate. https://www.mhlw.go.jp/file/05-Shingikai-11121000-Iyakushokuhinkyoku-Soumuka/0000168500.pdf They use several herbicides to manage the growth of weeds. Glyphosate has allowed them to implement conservation-tillage practices which provide long-term benefits to the soil, the air and the environmental health.

- Reduction or elimination plowing/tilling land

To cut CO2 emissions

- Capturing carbon soil

Improve soil health

- Reducing water runoff and limiting erosion13

"No pesticide regulatory agency anywhere in the world has considered Glyphosate to pose an increased risk of cancer to humans at current levels." - Health Canada (January 11, 2019, Health Canada).

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations , How to Feed the World in 2050

It is more critical than ever before to ensure Canadian farmers have the technological tools, equipment and assistance they need to feed a growing population.

By following proper agricultural, pest management and food safety practices Farmers will ensure that our food supply is healthy and plentiful. Glyphosate is one of many instruments they'll employ to ensure Canadians and everyone else around the world have access and affordability to nutritious and affordable food items.
