Avanos Medical (U.S. feeding tube placement Food & Drug Administration) has announced that it will be recalling Cortrak*2's enteral access system. Avanos is promoting the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System due to its ability to see the stomach of a patient and their small bowel. Avanos Medical feeding tube This permits the placing of a medical feed tube. Incorrectly inserting a tube can cause damage to the vocal cords, the lungs and the trachea. Avanos Medical recalls that there have been sixty injuries, 23 deaths and 23 illnesses that were caused by the misplacement or inadvertent insertion of nasogastric feeding tube while using the CORTRAK*2 Entral Access System. Injuries have included respiratory failure, pneumothorax (collapsed lung) as well as perforation (a hole in the lung's wall, esophagus, or the bowel), pneumonia, and the pleural effusion (excess fluid between the chest cavity and the lungs).
Avanos Medical has described a plan to supply users with updated labeling, to confirm the correct placement of nasogastric and nasoenteric tubes prior to use.
Avanos was the second alert issued by the FDA in 2022 about the use of enteral nutrition tubes. In February the FDA issued a caution to healthcare providers as well as parents about the possibility of strangulation when children use feeding tubes.
