Avanos Medical has recalled the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System in response to accidents and deaths that result from the misplacement of the nasoenteric as well as na tube. Avanos Medical The recall includes 629 devices that are distributed throughout the United States.
Avanos has launched the Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System, which is known for its screen-based visualization of the stomach or small bowel to assist in the proper placement of a medical feeding tube. Avanos Medical feeding tube Patients could suffer damage to their vocal cords, lungs or the trachea if the tube is not properly placed. Avanos Medical feeding tube The recall notification from Avanos Medical states that as of 2015, there were 60 deaths of patients and 23 injuries resulting from the incorrect placement of nasogastric feed tube when using the CORTRAK*2 entry access system. The causes of the injuries are pneumothorax, respiratory failure and perforation. feeding tube placement These are all forms of lung collapse.

Avanos was the second alert issued by the FDA in 2022 regarding tube feeding through the stomach. The FDA advised parents and healthcare professionals about the risk of strangulation for children who feed tubes. Two deaths due to strangulation in children was reported in 2021 as a result of the tube being placed around the neck of a patient.
