The versatility of contact lenses has never been greater. Find out the difference between standard contact lenses and how to protect your eyes from eye infections.
Soft contact lenses
Soft contact lenses are the most commonly prescribed contact lenses. These lenses can correct a variety of vision issues, such as:
Myopia (nearsightedness)
Hyperopia (farsightedness)
Eyes that blurred (astigmatism)
Presbyopia is an age-related decrease in the close-up view
Soft contact lenses offer comfort and make it easier to use as opposed to rigid gas permeable lenses. Contact lenses made of soft materials come in a variety of types including:
Lenses suitable for wear every day. These lenses are designed for one-day wear. They are able to be taken off to be disposed of after nightfall. There are other options, such as two-week disposable lenses as well as monthly disposable lenses in some cases, quarterly disposable lenses. They are generally taken off at night in order to wash and remove any traces of bacterial growth.
Overnight (extended) wear lenses. Some soft contact lenses can be worn for up to 30 days continuously, including while you sleep. However, this type contact lens wear could cause problems, such as the buildup of debris beneath the lens cornea, corneal issues or even serious eye infections.
Rigid gas permeable contact lenses
Gas-permeable rigid lenses offer clarity and sharp vision for patients with a variety of eye problems. These contact lenses might help if you've attempted soft contact lenses but weren't happy with their results or you have "dry eyes."
Contact lenses made of rigid gas permeable are more durable than soft lenses. They are also more permeable which allows an increased flow of oxygen into the cornea. Contact lenses must be taken out for disinfection and cleaning in the evening. Some contact lenses can be used for as long as at least a week however, others could be used up to 30 days.
It can take several days or up to two weeks to adapt to gas permeable rigid contact lenses. If your prescription doesn't change and you maintain the lenses, you may wear the same lenses from two to three years.
Specialized contact lenses
Based on your needs for vision depending on your vision needs, you may consider using specialized contacts, like:
Hybrid contact lenses. Hybrid lenses feature the rigid gas permeable central with a soft outer rings. They are able to correct farsightedness (nearsightedness), astigmatism, and age-related decline in close sight. Additionally, they are able to correct the irregular curvature of the cornea (keratoconus) They may also be simpler to utilize than standard gas permeable ones.
Multifocal contact lens. They come in diverse materials. They can treat farsightedness, nearsightedness, and presbyopia.
BLUE CONTACT LENSES Contact lenses that are tinted. Contact lenses may be tinted for therapeutic or cosmetic reasons. Tinting is a way to enhance color perception or adjust for the color blindness.
Contact lenses with sclera. These gas-permeable and rigid lenses could be more pronounced than other types and reach the outer white layer of your eyeball (sclera). If you suffer from a deformed or uneven cornea, these lenses will correct your vision.
Orthokeratology. This unique, gas-permeable lens can be worn at night to change your cornea's curve temporary. The result is clear vision when you're awake.
Contact lens coatings. The surface of the lens gets less slippery as a result of this treatment, which makes it less prone to getting affected by bacteria. This coating is able to be applied to rigid and soft gas permeable contact lens.
The perfect size
For a complete eye examination and fitting, talk to your eye doctor before you get contact lenses. It is possible that you will require a follow-up test after a week. 6 months and one month after which you will need to visit once a year , or every two years.
Avoiding complications
Contact lenses may cause discomfort , and sometimes even serious infection. To prevent problems:
It is important to maintain a clean and healthy lifestyle. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water prior to handling the contact. Cleanse your hands and dry with a clean towel.
Beware of contact with saliva or liquids. When you are swimming or in a hot tub make sure you remove your contacts. Don't put your lenses in your mouth , allowing them to get wet.
Contact lens solutions must be handled with care Make sure you use only sterilized, commercially-prepared products that are specifically designed for the lenses you own. Once you've finished disinfecting and storing the contacts dispose of the solution in the lens case. Your doctor may direct you to rub gently your lenses and then rinse them. RED CONTACT LENSES Do not use contact solutions that are beyond the expiration date.
Change your lenses and cases according to the recommendations. To replace your contact lenses, be sure to follow the guidelines of the manufacturer. Once you've worn your contact lenses cleanse and wash your case with the sterile solution. Tap water is not recommended. In order to drain the solution you may flip the case upside down , while it is air drying. Every three months, it's time to replace your case.
Don't use prescription contact lenses. Contact lenses may cause irritation to the eyes and cause infections. Speak to your eye doctor If you're interested in contact lenses with decorative features.
With proper usage and proper care dry eyes are an issue for contact lens wearers. Contact lenses must be taken off whenever your eyes start to become itchy or red. Lubricating drops could also help.
If you notice your vision becoming blurry or you feel discomfort in your eyes or intense sensitivity to light, you should see an eye doctor immediately for intervention.
