When the mobile-based Minecraft Earth was announced last year, it instantly drew comparisons to Pokemon Go because of its use of Augmented Reality and location-based games. It was very different as senior editor Jess Conditt can attest, since you didn't need to go outside to participate in the building and mining activities. Mattel now provides Minecraft Earth an entirely new play mode that Pokemon Go does not have: NFC-enabled figurines.

The Boost Mini figures cost $5 each and will feature a variety characters from Minecraft which include Steve, Alex and creepers and cows, ducks, and ducks. Each figure is adorable by itself, but placing it against an NFC-enabled device can unlock special features within Minecraft Earth for a certain amount of time, displayed by an indicator on the screen. As an incentive to collect all the minis (or take them away from your friends) you'll also get an XP reward for registering the mini with Minecraft Earth.

This spring's first batch includes 20 minis with 10 capabilities. Mattel also sells an accessory pouch that can be clipped to your belt to take your Minecraft Earth game with you on the go.
If you're not a fan of the game in particular but still want some of that delicious Minecraft toy action Mattel also announced a variety of brand new $3.50 blind box minis themed to the classic Minecraft as well as larger 3.5-inch figures that tie into the upcoming Minecraft Dungeons. The Redstone Monstrosity is particularly enjoyable because it's scaled to match the size of the toys, and is over six inches tall. The 3.5-inch figurines cost $10, and the monstrosity will retail for $25 when it's launched in the fall.
