Belgian Boy on the Verge of becoming World's Youngest University Graduate

Article content EINDHOVEN. Laurent Simons holds his puppy in his arms and appears like any other 9 year old boy. He then begins to describe his research at the Netherlands University where he is developing a computer circuit that can replicate a portion of the brain.



"What we're doing is putting neurons in and making connections to determine what happens to medication in a part of the brain," he says of the brain-on-chip project that combines electrical and biomedical engineering fields.

Article content Belgian boy wonder, with an intelligence of 145 and a bachelor's degree as electrical engineer at Eindhoven University of Technology next month is on track to be the world's youngest university graduate.

Article content Sammy is a puppy who is 9 weeks old and snoozed in his mom Lydia's arms as he talked about his plans for post-graduation.



Laurent, a Belgian-born Dutchman who completed high school in just one year, started university in September . He will complete the three-year bachelor's program in nine months.



"Every professor is really enthusiastic about having Laurent and for us, it's a special situation, of course, because he's the youngest student we've ever had," said program director Sjoerd Hulshof.



Article content "The speed of his mind - we cannot imagine what's happening inside his head. He's maybe three times more intelligent than the most brilliant student we've ever had."



Currently the youngest person to earn a college degree is American Michael Kearney, who made the record in June 1994 at 10 years 4 months, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.



When when he's not at university, Laurent says he walks the dog, plays video games like Minecraft and Fortnite or uploads photos to Instagram.

Nikola Tesla, the Serbian-American inventor, inspired him to study artificial organs and eventually create an entire artificial body in his lab. He explained that his grandparents suffered from heart disease.



International universities are offering many opportunities and Laurent's parents assist him make a decision. The U.S. West Coast is a well-known destination.



Alexander his father cannot predict Laurent's future because Laurent has surpassed all expectations thus far, but stressed that there was no need to hurry.
