'Minecraft Earth' will Shut down On June 30th

A little over a year after launching Minecraft Earth in the US, Microsoft announced this week that it will end the game later this year. Minecraft Earth players have until June 30th, 2021 to play the augmented reality game before Microsoft shuts down its servers, and it's no longer available for download from the app marketplaces.



Developer Mojang Studios attributed the shutdown to the coronavirus epidemic and all the changes in everyday life that it has brought. Minecraft "Minecraft Earth was designed to allow the freedom of movement and collaboration and collaboration - two things that have become near impossible in the current world situation," the studio said. Mojang, along with Niantic's Pokemon Go, had modified the game to allow it to be more accessible for players at home. Clearly, these changes weren't enough.

Mojang is rolling out one final update for the game , and claims it contains modifications "to make your time in Minecraft Earth as enjoyable as possible." In addition to other improvements the update gets rid with real-money transactions and drastically reduces the amount of time it will take players to create and create things in the game. The update also gives players the chance to view all the content that Mojang was working on before the announcement today. "We hope that these changes will allow you to explore, craft and build more - while staying safe inside," the studio said.



Microsoft will erase player data on July 1, after June 30th is finished. If you have spent money on Minecraft Earth at any point during the duration of the game, you'll be given a token that will allow you to download the Bedrock version of Minecraft on your mobile device. For Microsoft it is without a doubt an unsatisfactory conclusion to Minecraft Earth. Microsoft had high expectations for the game when it was first shown in action at WWDC 2019. The fact Minecraft Earth couldn't survive through the pandemic, with all the resources of Microsoft at its disposal isn't a positive sign for the future of consumer AR applications.



Mojang has stated that they are forever grateful for the amazing talent of the Minecraft community. "This was not an easy choice. We're doing everything possible to ensure you get the most enjoyment from Minecraft Earth before it goes dark."
