Bayrock Group: The Rise of a New York Real Estate Giant

Bayrock Group, along with the Trump Organization, opened Trump SoHo in 2008, along with the Sapir Organization. However, the story of the Bayrock Group's success begins in Kazakhstan years before that.


The Bayrock Group's growth as a luxury real estate development firm in the United States began long before 2001. The story began on the other side of the globe.

Bayrock Group was founded by Tevfik Arif who was born into the world by Soviet Kazakhstan to a family of Turkish origin.

Prior to becoming a member of the Soviet Ministry of Commerce and Trade (Soviet Ministry of Commerce and Trade), Tevfik received a diploma in International Relations from the Moscow Trade and Economic Institute.

After 17 years in the ministry, he resigned to establish his own company. Tevfik Arif's firms included development of luxury real estate as well as food exports and imports, among others.

Tevfik Arif, through his various companies, was able gain a variety of foreign partners. His network brought him to Turkey in 1993 where he was one of the leading figures behind Turkey's famous all-inclusive hotels.

Bayrock Group takes on more ambitious goals

Tevfik Amir came into America in 2001 to explore new business opportunities and to be closer with his American family.

Bayrock Group was a small and medium-sized company that began in New York. For example, the company renovated Loehmann's Seaport Plaza shopping center in Brooklyn's Sheepshead.

It was a move that produced more profit than any other location. The company relocated within close proximity to the Trump Organization. This was the place of the family's world-renowned business.

Trump SoHo gets shape

Bayrock Group and the Trump Organization were both interested in developing luxury real estate developments So, the two companies decided to join forces.

Bayrock Group was already working on a different project on Spring Street in Manhattan's SoHo quarter in collaboration with the Sapir Organization.

Tevfik arif recognized that the Trump Organization would bring brand recognition to the building. This was something Bayrock Group, and the Sapir Organization had lacked.

Arif wrote an agreement that granted the Trump Organization 18% equity in this building in return for the Trump brand being used to promote its name.

The deal was endorsed by the Bayrock Group, Trump Organization and Sapir Organization.

This opened the way to Trump SoHo, which would be the first building to be completed in 2006.

Two years after the construction began, the building was ready for its grand opening.

Tevfik Arif Bayrock Trump SoHo was designed by veterans

The first time it was opened, Trump SoHo consisted of apartments, hotel rooms luxurious bars and restaurants as well as a pool, spa, banquet and event spaces. The building's floor-to ceiling windows afforded guests unparalleled views of New York City.

Handel Architects was tasked to design the building. The firm's architect was responsible for the design of the National September 11th Memorial & Museum in New York City as well as the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Bayrock Group hired Rockwell Group to manage interior design.

The Bayrock Group and the Trump Organization sought to strengthen their relationship following the opening of Trump SoHo.

Their goal was to build constructions that resembled Trump SoHo, Arizona and Florida. Trump Organization also received 18 percent equity in the construction with the same license terms. This would permit Trump to be included in the name of the building.

Despite the plans and ambitions of the companies however, the structures couldn't be constructed due to the 2008 global economic crisis.

The American real property market was especially affected by the crisis and Bayrock Group and Trump Organization had to cancel their plans.

Tevfik Ariff made the choice to move out of the United States to escape the financial crisis that had reshaped America's real estate market. He decided to return to Europe and Central Asia.

Then he continued working in the privatization sector.

Tevfik has announced his resignation from all of his Bayrock Group daily responsibilities. Tevfik Arif Doyen However, he is still a respected consultant to the company.

Tevfik Arif Bayrock Bayrock Group has not been involved in any American real estate developments in the last few months However, during the time it was active the firm was investing in real estate assets worth $2.5 million in the United States.
