Coco and Lola - Will The Jazz Festival Disappoint You?

Robert McKee and John Lilly founded Pixar Animation Studios in 1998. In 2021, the company received an award for best animated feature at the Academy Awards, becoming the first ever recipient of this honor. However, the company was unable to capitalize on the success of Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and Cars, so it started searching for other franchises to expand their line of work. They are currently enjoying a renaissance of popularity and are reestablishing their status as auteur filmmakers with original comedies. After two sequels and one mini-movie, Coco is now the second animated feature film from Pixar that has won the Oscar for Best Picture. Now, Pixar is looking towards the future, and it has acquired the rights to the Japanese fantasy feature anime series Steinsway Children's Literature.



"Coco" is the prequel of Disney's animated feature film "Cars", voiced by Ellen DeGeneres (premium cable TV, 2002). Due to be released in March, Pixar will be bypassing the Disney feature film route and producing a live-action/ CG hybrid film starring Edgario San Diego, Marlon Brando, and Henry Selick. Coco is written and produced bywriters Will Hermes and Dan Lin, who also co-direct the film. Pixar hopes to expand the franchise into a live action/CG hybrid feature film starring Angelina Jolie and Reese Witherspoon.

After screening "Coco", it looks like the Japanese fantasy film, steinsway children's literature will have a home on DVD and possibly even IMAX screens. Walt Disney Home Entertainment will distribute "Coco" and Focus Features will distribute it. The 2020s will see the release of Disney's next animated masterpiece, "The Lion King", in theatres. The release date for "The Emperor's New Groove", the second film in the series, has not been announced by the studio. It is expected to be released in 2021. In my own personal opinion, I believe that the next "Lion King" film will be released in the second half of the 2020s, possibly in tandem with "Coco". A trilogy is definitely the way to go if Disney wants to capture the imaginations of people all over again. The "Lion King", "The Emperor's New Groove" films are box office smashes, and I believe that Disney would be foolish to release another film before the success of "The Emperor's New Groove".

I think it will be smart if Disney decides to release a film in theatres first before releasing the film on the internet. This way, the public can see the movie in theatres before they go to their homes. Whether or not "Pixar" makes more at the box office due to the early streaming service release, I am just not sure. It will most likely depend on how well the movie performs, and how well the Disney brand is positioned within the viewing marketplace.

Hopefully, after seeing both "Coco" and "Lion King", I am more convinced that a feature-length animated jazz movie (not to be confused with a video cartoon) is exactly what our children need. Maybe I am old-fashioned, but I truly believe that children (and adults) will find the concept of jazz entertaining. It makes perfect sense to use technology for bringing families closer, especially for parents with children who are just beginning to explore the possibilities offered by technology.
