Thousands of Australians are Entitled to Refunds from their NBN Telco

Tens of thousands NBN customers experiencing slow connections are advised to contact their telco provider because they could be eligible for an amount of money back.

After internet providers made misleading or false claims about speed and speeds, the ACCC announced on Wednesday that NBN customers may be eligible to receive a refund.

Telstra, Optus and Commander all admitted to selling NBN plans that were unattainable through sales and advertising.

Tens of thousands of NBN customers who experience slow connections have been advised to contact their telco provider to determine if they are eligible for a reimbursement

Due to the limitations of FTTN and FTTB technologies, users could never experience the advertised download speeds of 100 megabits per second.

The consumer watchdog claimed they had been negotiating with telcos over the last 15 months and accepted undertaking from each that they would get in touch with customers.

Mick Keogh, ACCC Acting Chair, has stated that two-thirds of affected consumers have not responded to emails or letters from their internet provider.

Mr Keogh said that they could be eligible to receive refunds, some as high as hundreds of dollars.

"The ACCC is asking NBN customers to contact their NBN retailer if they receive a letter or email offering remedies has been sent to them.

The watchdog stated that customers who have signed to an upgrade to an NBN plan in the past may be eligible for a refund if the telco advertised maximum connection speeds.

Telstra, Optus and Commander all admitted to selling NBN plans with unattainable speeds.

Within four weeks, the telco must examine their speed. If they are less than advertised speeds for the plan the customer has selected, they should offer alternative options.

The ACCC said the amount of any refund depends on the price that a person pays for a certain download speed and the price of the plan that can actually deliver it.

If you pay $100 per month for 100 Mbps maximum download speed, but receive only 37 Mbps, and a $70 per month plan delivers 50Mbps, then the refund is $30 for each month that you have already paid.

Mr Keogh stated that telcos are expected to provide customers with accurate information upfront about the speeds they can anticipate to experience and then meet their promises.

"Our message to RSPs (telcos) is that when you advertise a certain connection speed but customers don't enjoy the speed, you could be violating the Australian Consumer Law,' the lawyer said.
