Coronavirus: Leicester Church Uses Minecraft to Teach Bible to Teens

Coronavirus: Leicester church uses Minecraft to teach Bible to teens

17 May 2020

A church has resorted to Minecraft to teach its children about Christianity during the lockdown.

Leicester's St John the Baptist Church has been recreated on a server, so the youth group has a place to hold Bible classes.

Josh Young, the organiser, said it was a means of meeting young people "where they are" and engaging with them in a context they are used to.

Virtual reality means that they have also been able to be creative with lessons.

For instance, Mr. Young made an underwater whale so they could learn about the story of Jonah and challenged the teenagers to make boats to learn about when Jesus stopped a storm.

The youth worker, who is 27 years old, added, "Having a community of young people is crucial and that's why I was looking to maintain in the lockdown."

"They can't be friends with their friends, and some of them are really struggling right now. They can chat, play, and interact with each other on Minecraft without ever physically there. It's a platform to connect and create a communities.

"Young people are online" and the Bible teaches us how to meet people wherever they are in their communities.

"Jesus broke the boundaries of what people believed was normal worship, and he would be happy with the thought that the church is moving forwards."

Every Wednesday, around 20 children aged between 11 and 17 spend two-and-a half hours on the server.

They are free to explore the world and work on their own projects during this time, but for 30 seconds they are teleported into the communal space to complete an task inspired by the Bible.

Mr. Young said they had taken steps to ensure that the adults could keep out bad language, supervise who joined and had permission from the parents for their children to join.

Rosie, 15 years old, is one of the teens who regularly play at the club. She told us, "I love it because it lets me chat with my friends while playing, it's as enjoyable as getting together for our regular youth club."

"I thought it was great that Josh brought everyone to one spot. We also had a contest to build a boat using Matthew Chapter 8, when Jesus stopped the storm. My team was the winner because we created lightning storm clouds."
