Lego is taking on Minecraft by introducing a video game
2 June 2015
Lego, the Danish toy company has released a rival video game that is similar to Minecraft.
Lego Worlds is available now at PS11.99 through the Steam gaming platform. The game's final release, featuring classic and modern playsets , as well as well-known mini-figures, is scheduled in 2016.
Features will be added in response to feedback from players who play the game.
Lego already sells Minecraft playsets that allow gamers to physically create their own virtual creations. And Lego Worlds will invite fans to play the same game in reverse.
Tom Stone, managing director of TT Games, which will launch Lego Worlds the game, said that it "embodies the physical, Lego brick-building fun that people have enjoyed for a long time, on a digital platform that provides a new experience using the beloved bricks".
"From the editor for bricks-by-brick, to discovering an extensive range of characters, items and creatures to create your own worlds, the possibilities of creativity are endless," he added.
Favorite toy
Daniel Goldberg, who wrote an article about the development of Minecraft said that he was "surprised" that it took so long.
He claimed that Minecraft was exactly what Lego should have done 10 years ago.
"I'm sure it will be a huge success for them."
Markus Persson, the Swedish video games developer who came up with Minecraft has made no secret of his enthusiasm for Lego, and it appears to be mutual.
David Gram, Lego's Marketing Director, has stated in the past year that "Minecraft was a digital Lego." Mcprofile We only wish we had invented it."
Mr. Goldberg thinks Mr Persson, who is also known as Notch, will be "flattered" by the match.
"Lego was his favourite toy as a child and was the main inspiration behind Minecraft, so it is good to see things going full circle," he said.
"I do not believe there will be animosity. Game developers generally are usually happy when someone copies their game."
Lego is marketed to youngsters, but it is also marketed to adults who are a bit of a zealous.
Microsoft purchased Minecraft last year. It is a huge success with both children and adults.
"The audience for Minecraft has proven to be quite big and I'm confident there will be plenty of room for both games," said Mr Goldberg.
