The company published on its blog a post titled "Minecraft and NFTs" and acknowledged that some creators and companies have begun to launch NFT projects that use Minecraft world skin packs and files. The blog post suggested that Minecraft creators might use the game to create and market collectible NFTs. Mpservers These NFTs could be earned through activities on the Minecraft server or as a reward for their activities in the real world.
Mojang has stated in its post that blockchain technologies are not allowed to be integrated into Minecraft client and server applications. They are also not used to create NFTs that are linked to any game content, including worlds and skins.
"We will be watching closely how blockchain technology develops over time to ensure that these principles are not violated and to determine if it can enable safer gaming as well as other inclusive and practical games," the company stated. "However, we have no plans to integrate blockchain technology into Minecraft right now."
In response to criticism from players, and the collapse of the cryptocurrency market, the traditional gaming industry has been trying to separate itself from NFTs in recent months. Sony last week said it would be launching an online collectibles feature as part the new PlayStation rewards program, but stated clearly that it its collectibles were "definitely not NFTs." Ubisoft was the first major game publisher, to experiment with NFTs in the fall of last year and ended the experiment after just four months. Last October, Steam marketplace owner Valve declared that it would not be allowing any games using NFT technology or blockchain However, Fortnite creator Epic Games recently opened the doors to these products on its PC game store.
Microsoft has yet to issue any firm opinions on the subject in relation to its gaming properties. But Xbox chief and Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said in Protocol in the past year that he was "leery" of the "near-term type of hysteria about NFTs" and the possibility of fraud, scams and the pyramid scheme character of the crypto market that could lead to consumers losing vast sums of real money very quickly. Spencer separately told Axios in the fall of last year that NFTs were able to be exploitative, and that the market was brimming with "a variety of things that probably aren't items you would like to have in your store."
Mojang's blog article echoes similar views. "Each of these applications of NFTs and other blockchain technologies creates digital ownership built on exclusion and scarcity which is not in alignment with Minecraft values of creative inclusion and playing together," the company wrote. "NFTs are not inclusive of all our community and create a semblance of the haves and the have-nots.
