Mojang's breakout smash Minecraft took second place in a Google-issued list of the most popular YouTube search queries of 2014, placing it immediately behind the word "music" in terms of frequency of searches.
According to Google, "Minecraft" was the most popular search on YouTube in 2014 than "movies". Gaming personality PewDiePie was also among YouTube's top searches in 2014, trailing the queries for Disney's Frozen and for the artists Drake and Beyonce.
Google reports that searches and engagement for gaming-related content are increasing rapidly even though the majority of users don't necessarily identify as gamers. According to the report the report, an Google Consumer Survey was conducted in October 2014, among those who said they had watched gaming videos on YouTube. It found that only 37% of respondents considered themselves gamers. "When asked about their motives for watching gaming videos, users were able to mention 'entertainment' and "humor frequently, but also were asked about 'learning new strategies' or 'game tips.'"
The report continues: "We also wanted out why they watched videos by creators like SkyDoesMinecraft and PewDiePie. Many of them replied, "Because they are hilarious!" Some even have compared these videos to stand-up comedy. One of the new gaming creators summarized his enthusiasm by using the following metaphor: "You don't need to play soccer to enjoy it television."
