Minecraft Says "No" To NFTs

Mojang Studios, the makers of the ever-popular Minecraft, is taking a page from the classic U.S. anti-drugs playbook, though it seems "Just Say No" works much better for money-making schemes based on blockchain than it ever did for the use of narcotics.

The Microsoft-owned studio wrote on its blog Wednesday that NFTs in Minecraft "are generally not something we will accept or support." The company stated that it was changing its Minecraft Usage Guidelines to clarify that blockchain technology cannot be allowed to integrate into the Minecraft game client, and will not be used to create NFTs based on any in-game content, be it items, skins or even mods.

The developers wrote that blockchain technology's sense of digital ownership is based on "scarcity and exclusion" which "does not match with Minecraft values of inclusion in the creative process and playing together." They also said that third party NFTs may end up costing players who buy them, as they rely on the creators of blockchain technology "who might disappear without notice."

This is what actually occurred. Blockverse, a NFT project that was said to be designed for Minecraft, scammed investors to the amount of $1.2 million. It was offered in NFT forms on OpenSeas and other websites. The project also included the cryptocurrency called $Diamond. In January, the project's creators suddenly took all the money they invested and then deleted the project's website, Discord, and Twitter account. If you're not aware this, it's known as a "rug pull," and it's much too common in the crypto industry.

Although the Minecraft developers have left it open for blockchain technology to be added in the near future but they also stated that they do not have plans to implement blockchain technology in Minecraft at the moment.

SO MANY BOOKS

It is likely that projects that were already trying to integrate Minecraft into blockchain technology were not thrilled by the news. NFT Worlds, a company which uses blockchain to enable users to purchase NFTs for their Minecraft, a digital world, was severely impacted. The company posted a Discord message to its Twitter account saying they were working on solutions "around the Minecraft EULA changes," adding they were even considering pivoting to creating their own Minecraft-like gaming platform.

As of August 2021 , according to figures from Statista, Minecraft is still being played by 141 million people every month, despite the game being almost 13 years old. Helen Chiang, the Minecraft studio head, stated to Edge Magazine in a 2019 interview that the average age for Minecraft players was 24. But the game is specifically designed to be child-friendly, Chiang said. For Minecraft players, the ERSB rating is 10 years old or older. The fact that there is a money-making investment plan built into the client does raise concerns and could lead to abuse, particularly when you expose children to. Chiang reported to have stated to Edge that "We need to be really transparent and clear about how we plan to monetize in the game."

Other games designed for children like Roblox have all-in on monetization and promotions in-game geared toward kids. Users are incentivized to spend Roblux on items within the game while exploring worlds designed to promote products from brands like Vans, Nike, and Ralph Lauren. However, the company that developed the game has updated its community standards in the past year to take an aim at potential use of NFTs in game. Users, they said, are not permitted to make use of Roblox to offer payment to act as a model for assets.
