Mojang's breakout smash Minecraft was ranked second in a Google-issued list of the most popular YouTube searches of 2014. The game ranked right just behind "music" in terms of frequency of searches.
According to Google, "Minecraft" was searched more often on YouTube in 2014 than "movies". PewDiePie is a popular gaming character, was also among the top searched terms on YouTube in 2014. This was behind queries for Disney's Frozen as well as for artists Drake and Beyonce.
Google reports that users are more likely to search for gaming-related content and that engagement is rising even though many of those surveyed don't consider themselves as gamers. Just Another Blog YouTube videos in the "Gaming" category hit the top of the Top 10 Trending list on 25 different days in October of 2014.
"A Google Consumer Survey fielded in October 2014 of people who reported watching gaming videos on YouTube found that only a portion of this group (37 percent) considers themselves 'gamers,'" the report states. "When asked why they watch gaming videos, people mentioned the entertainment aspect and also as learning new strategies or tips.
The report continues: "We also wanted to learn why people are drawn to videos from creators like PewDiePie and SkyDoesMinecraft. Many of them replied, 'Because they're hilarious!' These videos were also compared to stand-up comedy. One of the game's upcoming creators summarized his enthusiasm by using the following analogy: "You don't need to play soccer to be a fan of television."
