What do Things Taste Like?

Alex: You've also created an open Marketplace map of Summer's base.



Max Brooks: Yes! You can see the mountain in the map after Guy and Summer have left. adda bank In reality, it was a big challenge. I was about two-thirds through the story The Mountain when I finally sat down and started playing the game. The Nether was shifting from top to bottom. Instead of being angry, I realized that this was the most important thing I learned in my life. You must change with the world when it changes.



Alex: The book is very detailed similar to The Island.



Max Brooks: Research is an integral part of what I do. I don't write a lot of books because I have to do a lot of research. When it comes to something like Minecraft I live with the fear of someone saying, "That would never happen!" So I played thousands of hours in Minecraft and made sure that the physics of the game are reflected in the book. Plus, there are certain things that happen in Minecraft that you cannot think of on your own. My character from The Island shoots his last shot at a creeper and then hits a bat that is hit by. This actually happened while I was playing Minecraft!



Alex: A lot of the fun of these books comes from the way they feel so real.



Max Brooks: Yeah, and, in everything I write, I want to establish trust with the reader. I would like them to know that when they read one of my books, they can trust me to take them on a an adventure through a world which I am familiar with - that I'm their guide on the journey.



Alex: I enjoyed your insight into the smell of Minecraft smells like. Netherrack This was a great eye-opener.



Max Brooks: Sarah Peed, my editor, is truly a blessing. When I first published the book she pushed me to ask what the Island feels like. What do things taste like? How does the breeze feel on your skin? What does the grass feel like under your feet? I wanted the book to feel immersive so I came up with the idea of netherrack should smell sulfurous. It must smell like farts. Yes, I said it! Night Vision should taste like carrot soda. It should be tangy, bubbly, and have a little bite on the tongue. I wanted people to feel as if they were there.
