Tate Gallery teams up with Minecraft By Dougal Shaw Technology reporter
The Tate Gallery will exhibit some of its most well-known artworks in 3D within the virtual world of Minecraft. Is this a great way for art to be appreciated?
Have you ever thought about stepping into a painting, and taking a little bit of an exploration inside it?
The Tate invites visitors to climb up its art and take a good look.
There will be no security guards on duty.
Andre Derain's 1906 painting The Pool of London, and Christopher Nevinson's depiction of New York, Soul of the Soulless City (1920) is the first pair to get this digital, 3D makeover.
Jane Burton, Tate Media's Creative Director Jane Burton, Tate Media's Creative Director, explains that visitors will be able to see a white cube that is the Tate Gallery.
"You enter the room with the painting in front of you.
"What you can now do is walk up to the painting and literally dive into it. That's where the adventure starts."
Enter the art
Visitors can interact with the world of the painting.
You'll be able to ride a train to get a passing view of Nevinson's cityscape for example. Stop for sandwiches as you wait for construction workers to finish the skyscrapers.
Visitors should be aware of pirates in the Thames when visiting Derain's work and may play around with mixing explosive paint pigments.
"You will explore various challenges and activities that connect to the themes of the art.
"It's art, history, and adventure," says Jane Burton, whose children introduced her to the wonders of Minecraft.
Adam Clarke, a well-known Minecraft creator, originally suggested that Minecraft exhibits be created.
He proposed the idea for Tate's IK Prize, which is awarded to an idea which utilizes digital technology to inspire people with the arts.
When the idea finally came to fruition, Tate enlisted the skills of other famous Minecraft builders such as Dragnoz, Kupo, Featherblade and Tewkesape to create the worlds that were influenced by the famous photos.
However not everyone is convinced.

Perspective
These Minecraft creations will provide younger, new audiences familiarity with artworks, and when they see the originals in a gallery it's similar to "seeing an old friend", says Times art critic Rachel Campbell-Johnston.
That feeling of recognition, "like seeing a celebrity" is a powerful way to help appreciate art and encourage audiences.
"But ironically, the Minecraft works themselves offer a flatter experience," she continues.
"It is more of an entertainment experience instead of a creative connection with the painting when [Minecrafts's] 3D mapping replaces the realistic painting's illusionistic surfaces, and does the work for you."
Digital opening
You can download the two works of Derain and Nevinson beginning Monday
Minecraft players have to pay a fee to join, however the maps that are downloaded and Tate's pictures are free.
With six more 3D masterpieces planned viewers will be watching with interest to see how long the lines are on Monday when Tate's Minecraft exhibition opens its digital doors.
