Minecraft-makers Cancel Film Inspired By Game

Minecraft-makers cancel film inspired by game

Mojang, the maker of Minecraft has intervened to block the production of a film within the game's block-built world.

The creators of Birth of a Man had launched an appeal on Kickstarter for $600,000 (PS366,000) to finance the production of the film.

Just a few hours after the project was launched, it was canceled without explanation by its creator.

Mojang founder Markuss Persson later posted a message on Twitter to explain the reason why the company was shut down.

"We don't allow [half-a-million-dollar Kickstarter projects] based on our [intellectual property] without any deals in place," wrote Mr Persson, also known as Notch, in a tweet.

The message is believed to be referring to the absence of a licensing agreement signed between Mojang and the film-makers to use blocks, objects and other elements similar to those seen in the game. The film was planned to be released on YouTube later in 2014.

A teaser trailer was uploaded on the Kickstarter project page. It showcased concept footage that combined live action with creatures, landscapes and weapons.

Brandon Laatsch, the director of the short film, stated that he had been working for the idea of the idea of a Minecraft film for more than 12 years.

As he and the others involved with the project were dedicated gamers, he believed that the film would be better than other films that are based on well-known games he said.

In the teaser video, he stated that Minecraft was the perfect video game to adapt to a movie.

"The reason it doesn't have characters is that it doesn't have stories, which I consider a huge benefit, because we can write our own story."

Mr. Laatsch has not yet made a statement on the reasons why the project was scrapped or if it's likely to be revived after discussions with Mojang regarding licensing its intellectual property.
