Brief History

The TDP was established in March 1982 by Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (often referred to as NTR), a former Andhra Pradesh-born Telugu film director and celebrity. The single stated philosophy of the TDP was its commitment to maintaining "the political, economic, social, and cultural foundations of Telugu-speaking people." The party's major adversary at the time of its founding was the Indian National Congress (Congress Party), which had been in charge of the state government since Andhra Pradesh's formation in 1956.
