What's On The Rise?
Getting the lowest Los Angeles auto insurance premiums is a challenge for many drivers. The costs of auto insurance keep rising, and some insurers are hiking rates without warning. In addition, Los Angeles drivers have other stresses to contend with, including the often high cost of gasoline. "We pay way too much," complained one driver. "I am trying to cut back on my driving so we can save on gas."

The good news is that many drivers are able to obtain low rates by changing their driving habits. One method that Los Angeles auto insurance companies suggest to reduce the cost of insurance is to drive less. Many Los Angeles drivers who receive traffic violations face higher rates when they renew their policies. "The worst thing you can do to keep your rates down is to get traffic tickets," says Mary Kane, a Southern California insurance expert. "But even without traffic tickets, if you are driving too slow you will get them," she cautions. "If you want to drive more smoothly and safely you will have to change your driving habits."

Other ways that lower your Los Angeles auto insurance premiums are to drive safer and avoid getting into vehicle accidents. Insurance experts suggest that people who live in areas that experience a higher rate of vandalism or auto thefts should install anti-theft systems in their vehicles. "A car without an anti-theft system is like an empty bank account," says Kane. "If you don't want to be caught without your car, you need to protect it from thieves." Another good way to keep your premiums low is to take a defensive driving class. " Defensive driving courses not only reduce your rates, they also give you a certificate of completion," says Richard Webster, manager of the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles' Division of Highway Safety and Motorcycle Education.

If your driving record is less than perfect, Los Angeles car insurance rates are going to be higher, as is the case with most insurance rates. The most important factor determining your rate is your driving record. Drivers with a poor driving record, or a criminal record, will pay higher rates. Drivers with clean records will have lower rates.

When you are calculating your Los Angeles auto insurance rates you have to be aware of a couple of factors that can increase or decrease your rate. First, do you have sufficient liability coverage levels? "There are two types of liability coverage in California: personal injury protection and property damage and liability for medical payments," says Richard Webster, manager of the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles' Division of Highway Safety and Motorcycle Education. "The higher the amount of coverage, the more you'll pay for each accident, with higher premiums." On the other hand, do you have adequate collision and comprehensive coverage levels? "Collision coverage is designed to pay for repairs after an accident, regardless of who caused it, and comprehensive coverage pays for damage to your car and other property, regardless of who may be at fault," says Webster.

Another important factor that determines your Los Angeles auto rates is your credit score. "Your credit rating affects not only your premiums but also the rate you will end up paying for general automobile insurance," says Webster. "If you have bad credit, insurers may raise your premiums or drop your coverage, so it's important to check your score before purchasing a policy."

Los Angeles residents who drive flashy cars will pay higher rates. "Car insurers see windsurfing, jet skis and other sporty automobiles as risky drivers with higher insurance risks and lower market values," says Webster. "The insurance company will assess the risk you pose to others and give you a premium based on that assessment." Insurance premiums are not determined solely by what vehicle you drive, although, the vehicle you choose does affect your rate.

California's legal system allows insurers to check the driver's past driving record. If you have traffic violations or a DUI arrest on your record, you can expect to pay more for your vehicle coverage. For car-insurance-finder.com , many Los Angeles residents avoid areas that have heavy traffic or have a high crime rate. "Auto insurers don't like living in high-crime neighborhoods because they assume you will get into an accident or become a victim of theft," says Webster.
