Developer Creates a Wonderful Programming Font Based On Minecraft

North Carolina-based developer Idrees Hassan loves Minecraft so that he's recently created a monospaced font to program in based on the typeface found in the highly acclaimed video game. The result, Monocraft, gives programmers the feeling of playing Minecraft without using any assets from the game.

"To be truthful, I created this font because I thought it would be fun to learn how fonts worked," Hassan told Ars. "Existing Minecraft fonts lacked a many details, such as proper kerning or pixel size. Therefore, I decided to make my own. Once that was done there was nothing that could stop me from going overboard and turning it into a 'proper' programming font. In addition, I now can write Minecraft plugins using a Minecraft font!"

Hassan developed the Minecraft font to be used for development purposes. He added serifs to make letters such as "i" and 'l easier to recognize, invented new programming characters and improved the arrow characters to make it easier to read. (Ligature characters blend popular operational character strings like "! minecraft servers =" into one character, but they're not always popular with developers.)

You can download Monocraft from GitHub for free (get "Monocraft.otf" on the Releases page). Monocraft is not officially endorsed by Microsoft or Mojang and is considered to be as a fan-project. As an OpenType font, it is compatible on Windows, Mac, or Linux. Right-click the font file to install it on Windows. On a Mac double-click the font file and select "Install Font" in the Font Book window that appears.

Hassan previously created a faithful reproduction of the Minecraft font that uses variable spacing, similar to the font used in Minecraft. It is also available on GitHub.

Markus "Notch", the Minecraft creator, initially designed the Minecraft font in an earlier game called Legend of the Chambered. It was around 2008. The Minecraft font has an old-fashioned pixel-art style that harkens back to 16-bit and 8-bit console games that was a great match for Notch's lo-fi style of art. Now it has gained a new function as a playful typeface for developers from all over the world.
