Why You Should Get Child Health Insurance Through Arkansas
As a recent graduate of the college, I've been advocating for years for the expansion and betterment of the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). There are many reasons why I think it is necessary to expand CHIP. One of those reasons centers around the fact that it is currently offered in only 31 states. Even more telling is the fact that at least two-thirds of those states' residents (over half) cannot obtain affordable health insurance coverage because of the fact that they either don't have sufficient income to make it worth the premium or they have been rejected based on their current health insurance status.

Now, I know what you're thinking... if only all states had such liberal policies, then how come we don't? The answer is simple. Not all states have such liberal policies because they have been unwilling to expand the pool of insured individuals. In Arkansas, for instance, insurance providers are required to accept all applicants, regardless of their health insurance status. That means if you want health coverage and are unemployed, you're out of luck.

Of course, there are other ways that CHIP could be made more effective - by expanding the eligibility requirements, raising the maximum coverage, eliminating exclusions, etc. But those things are already being done. In other words, why haven't the Arkansas residents just yet purchased full-fledged CHIP insurance coverage?

The reason I think it makes sense to expand CHIP is because it would allow every single person who is currently uninsured to obtain proper medical care. Imagine, after working years for a company that has no benefits, your child becomes injured. Now, as the parent you have no choice but to accept the fact that your child will require months or maybe years of intensive medical care.

What's more, consider the future. In a few years, when your child's condition has improved sufficiently, you may decide to trade in your insurance plan and buy him his very own policy. In that case, not only will he get all the healthcare benefits - he'll also get his own dental plan. And the good thing about that - you won't have to contribute anything to his medical expenses. He'll just have to pay for it himself.

Of course, he won't be covered for everything, but at least you'll have his health insurance. The same goes for your spouse. If either of you need to go to a specialist, you don't need to worry about whether you can afford it. Both of you will get the exact same level of health insurance as well. Just make sure you're both working in the same field.

Another great benefit of CHIP is its maternity benefits. Any American woman over 18 who is eligible can apply for CHIP, regardless of her financial situation. There's even a special program for expectant mothers who want to breastfeed while still insured through CHIP. (The Arkansas Governor has said he would continue to support the program.)

Like many other programs of this kind, CHIP is designed to cover the costs of medical care for children who would otherwise be eligible for Medicaid, the state's Medicaid program. The difference lies in the way CHIP pays for a child's healthcare. Medicaid pays a set percentage of medical costs for children, with no means testing or deductibles.
