Tate Gallery Teams up With Minecraft

Tate Gallery teams up with Minecraft By Dougal Shaw Technology reporter

21 November 2014

The Tate Gallery will exhibit some of its most well-known works in 3D within the virtual world of Minecraft. What is the best way for art to be appreciated?

Have you ever thought of stepping into the painting and performing some exploring?

The Tate invites visitors to clamber over its artworks and have a good rummage.

There will be no security guards keeping watch.

It has teamed up with the Minecraft creators - an online computer game where millions of players meticulously build fantasy worlds block-by-block, to create 3D versions of two of its paintings in an online gallery.

Andre Derain's 1906 painting The Pool of London, and Christopher Nevinson's depiction of New York, Soul of the Soulless City (1920) are the first two paintings to receive this digital, 3D transformation.

Jane Burton, Tate Media's Creative Director, explains that visitors will be able to see a white cube that represents the Tate Gallery.

"You walk through the door with the painting in front of you.

"What you can do is go up to the painting and plunge into it. This is where your adventure begins."

Enter the art

Visitors will be able to engage with the painting's world.

You can ride a train to get an up-close view of Nevinson's cityscape, for example. Or stop for sandwiches with builders as they break from building towers.

Visitors should be aware of pirates in the Thames when visiting Derain's work and may play around with mixing explosive paint pigments.

"You explore activities and challenges which are connected to the themes of the artwork.

Jane Burton, whose children introduced Jane to the power and potential of Minecraft Jane Burton, who is the creator of Minecraft, says, "It's art history adventure,"

Adam Clarke, a well-known Minecraft creator, originally suggested that Minecraft exhibits be created.

He was the one who suggested the idea of Tate's IK Prize. This prize is given to an idea that uses digital technology to engage people with the arts.

Tate utilized the skills of other famous Minecraft builders, including Featherblade, Featherblade, Dragnoz and Featherblade, to create the worlds inspired by the famous images.

However, not everyone is convinced.

Perspective

These Minecraft creations will give younger viewers a better appreciation of art works to enable them to see original artworks in galleries. Rachel Campbell-Johnston, Times art critic, says it's like "seeing an old buddy".

This sense of recognition, "like seeing celebrities" is a powerful tool to inspire art appreciation and encourage viewers.

She continues, "But ironically the Minecraft works themselves offer an even flatter experience."

"It feels more like entertainment rather than an imaginative relationship with the painting, when the 3D mapping of Minecraft replaces the realistic painting's illusionistic surfaces and does the work for you."

Digital opening

You can download the two works of Derain and Nevinson beginning Monday

Players must pay to join the Minecraft community, but the maps available for download of Tate's photos are free.

With six more 3D masterpieces planned viewers will be watching to see how large the queues will be on Monday when Tate's Minecraft exhibition opens its digital doors.
