A month ago, RuneScape players started to experience login errors due to a server issue. The problem was soon resolved for the majority of players, however according to estimates by Jagex's developer, around 1% of players were locked out of their accounts. While there were frequent updates regarding attempts to restore accounts for the venerable MMORPG, the affected players are now able to return to the game.
In essence, the current character data for the 1percent of RuneScape players affected was erased as part of the server issue. Extrememining Backups from February 8 are still exist however, to fill in the gap until the server's downtime, Jagex is using its telemetry data to restore the data that was lost. It's a complex process that required several beta tests to ensure that the data on the account was correct.
The first wave of account restorations began around March's end. A second major wave is scheduled for April 6 but it's not clear when it will be for all players.
Jagex has set up an "aftercare" assistance program to ensure that the restoration of accounts is correct, "but we can't guarantee that everything will be restored to the way it was even with the assistance of this aftercare program. If this is the case, be assured that we'll do what we can to compensate for any loss. We'll stand by you."
Players affected with memberships had those memberships extended by one month and will be receiving an additional month of the service. A 'Goodwill Bundle' will be available to them, and includes a range of in-game items. The bundle will be available on April 6.
